Yesterday's People

"So where did they come from, then?"

"Before us, that's for sure. Why, they look like our ancestors' brothers and sisters many centuries later."

This article discusses the New World Natives within the general area of Luoyang.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Before the Tang settlers discovered the New World, Yesterday's People spoke all kinds of dialects, most lost to history.

The surviving ones are supposedly similar to remnants of Xia Dynasty Chinese.

Shared customary codes and values

When the Tang settlers first arrived, they were struck by the similarity of the Yesterday's People to the mythical descriptions of the Xia Dynasty, those where mothers and sisters had more say than usual, and a wild nature ruled.

Supposedly, the Tang settlers began snubbing their Yesterday's brothers after the Anglicization movement, having accepted the belief that there was only one certain way to attain advancement in civilization.

There was no room for the ways of Yesterdays in a time that demanded mass industrialization and stricter social norms for a society that could run on clockwork.

Average technological level

Prior to the Tang settlers, the Yesterday's People had a prehistoric level of technology. Only a few groups had discovered metal ore and how to process it into simple metal tools.

In the present time, the Yesterday's People have the same technological level as the rest of the Tang Colony States.

Common Dress code

As most Yesterday's People were hunters and foragers, they mainly wore dried skins of their hunted game.

Later, they discovered how to weave cloth from local plants and added some variety to their skinned clothing.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Like the Chinese majority they now live with, Yesterday's People treat true names with such respect that they would rather call each other and themselves false names first.

Common Taboos

"Do not, do not, do not waste your food. Eat it right down to bone and marrow."
— Advice overheard from a Yesterday's elder.

Yesterday's People think it is a taboo to waste food, as they had lived in rough conditions for centuries before the Tang settlers came.
As a result they believe all possible parts of an animal save for its bones and poison should be consumed.
This seemed uncivilized to the Tang settlers who could afford to eat only the meat and thoracic organs of their livestock.

Common Myths and Legends

They believe in a great spirit who watches over them, a son of the first mother who continued shaping the world according to her will after death.

Their general belief in the creation of man is similar to the Tang settlers', both believe a master craftsman made people out of clay and gave them free will.

Yesterday's People do not believe that someone sealed the sky after a massive disaster, however.
