Lunalimina Settlement in New Generica | World Anvil

Lunalimina

Crumbling tomes deep within the archives of High Hedgemont speak of an ancient moon goddess and the fantastical, cyclopean library-city she built for her kind high above the clouds and stars of the night sky. Lunalimina, as the place was called, was a vast palace of non-euclidean marble colonades and midnight blue streamers lined with endless bookshelves and cast in the diaphenous glow of candle clusters. From this vast structure flowed the life-waters of the world, blessing every birth and filling the Crystal Eye with its first tears. Most enticing, however, is the part not written of: the city's fall during the plagues of yesteryear - or, more importantly, its lack thereof.

Demographics

Lunalimina was known to have a small population of humanoids native to, and specially adapted to live in, the city's unique environment. These people were a separate, but recognizeable, branch of the human family known as Lunars. Aside from worshipers and mages powerful enough to reach the place, Lunalimina was said to have direct access to the mysterious semi-psychic world of the fae. For this reason, all sorts of near-human and fae-touched creatures, such as hengeyokai, resided in the fabled city. Suggestions that the goddess, Myraluna, had experimented with the creation of creatures intermingled with, or made entirely of, clockwork go largely unexplored in the existing texts because some of the later volumes in the 'Lunaliminal Mythos' have long-since gone missing or have crumbled to dust.

Government

Lunalimina was said to be a constitutional monarchy. Though Myraluna was said to rule all with a word, in practice, she was far too busy with the affairs of her station - ensuring the continuing flow of lifeenergy to the world of Generica - to directly intervene in the day-to-day affairs of her subjects. Instead, a cadre of her best advisors and prominent members of the Lunar community worked together to resolve any issues that might arise.

Industry & Trade

The Lunars were said to only rarely interact with those living on Generica and usually did so only to ferry supplicants to the moon goddess back and forth or to conduct business with the fae courts far from the prying eyes of human scholars. Nevertheless, the Lunars were said to sometimes gift devout humans with pertinent pieces of knoweldge that still survive in some form into the present day. Lunars are said to have advanced the fields of medicine, alchemy, navigation, horticulture, and engineering at various points in Generica's history, though what they gained in return for this knowlege is long lost to recollection.

Infrastructure

It is not known if the air of New Generica's moon is currently breathable, but the stories of Lunalimina suggest that the city's superstructure kept a bubble of 'pastel indigo air' trapped around itself to ensure that the citizens remained at all times in warm comfort. The city was carved into the moon's surface, hollowing out the planetoid's interior; the occasional appearance of jags and points of light at the new moon's dark limb seem to confirm these statements into the modern day, though none in recent memory have been powerful enough to go to the moon and explore. Islands floating apart from the main structure were constructed to serve as vast greenhouses so that the residents could feed themselves and enjoy the beauty of plants not typically found anywhere except Generica's surface. Instead of naturally-formed rivers or wells, vast networks of viaducts, canals, and pools flowed from parts unknown within the moon's interior to cool and moisten the air.   The labyrinthine corridors of the vast marble complex were said to sometimes echo with the ticking of vast, well-oiled clockworks somewhere deep within, but never loud enough to disrupt reading. The purpose of these clockworks, it was said, was to keep time with the whole of the celestial sphere so that the phases of the moon would not go out of alignment with the phases of the tides or nocturnal biological processes. Observatories with periscopes slaved to these hidden clockworks helped ensure synchronicity.
