Writing System

The Dwarven writing system is characterized by its angular and robust appearance. The script features sharp, straight lines and well-defined angles, reflecting the Dwarves' precise craftsmanship and their preference for strong, durable forms.  Dwarven writing incorporates a set of runic symbols that represent individual sounds or concepts. These symbols are distinct and easily distinguishable, enabling efficient communication and clear expression of ideas. Each symbol may consist of straight lines, intersecting angles, and geometric shapes, reinforcing the script's angular aesthetic.   The Dwarven script is designed to convey information in a compact and efficient manner. The angular nature of the characters allows for close placement, enabling more content to be written within a limited space. Dwarves value efficiency and practicality, and their script reflects these qualities.    Dwarven writing is often carved or engraved onto durable materials such as stone or metal. The angular script lends itself well to these mediums, allowing the Dwarves to create enduring inscriptions and markings. Stone tablets, metal plaques, and even the walls of their strongholds may bear the impressive etchings of the Dwarven script.

Sentence Structure

Subject-Object-Verb (SOV): Dwarven sentence structure typically follows a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. The subject, representing the doer of the action, comes first, followed by the object, which receives the action, and finally, the verb that expresses the action or state. This word order is a distinctive feature of the Dwarven language. Modifiers before Nouns: In Dwarven, adjectives, possessives, and other modifiers generally come before the nouns they modify. This structure emphasizes the descriptive elements of the sentence and provides clarity by immediately associating modifiers with their respective nouns.   Inflected Verbs: Dwarven verbs are often inflected to indicate tense, mood, aspect, and other grammatical features. Verb conjugation reflects the Dwarves' attention to detail and precision in their communication. The inflections serve to convey subtle nuances of time, manner, and intention in their expressions.   Noun-Verb Agreement: Dwarven nouns and verbs typically exhibit agreement in number and sometimes gender. This agreement ensures grammatical harmony within the sentence. Nouns and their associated verbs align to maintain coherence and accuracy in Dwarven sentence structure.   Vigorous Vocabulary: The Dwarven language includes a rich and vigorous vocabulary. The use of strong and evocative words contributes to the sense of determination, resilience, and craftsmanship that define the Dwarves. The vocabulary often revolves around mining, forging, warfare, and other aspects of Dwarven culture.   Concise and Direct Communication: Dwarven sentences tend to be concise and direct, aiming for clarity and efficiency. Dwarves value practicality and strive to express their thoughts and intentions with precision, avoiding unnecessary embellishments or verbosity.   Conditional Clauses and Complex Syntax: Dwarven language can incorporate conditional clauses and complex sentence structures to express complex ideas. Dwarves are known for their strategic thinking and meticulous planning, which may manifest in their ability to construct intricate sentences with multiple clauses.
