"They are half man and half celestial. They walk, talk, eat, and sleep as we do, but they sprout wings and have eyes of fire, smiting the undead with the fury of the gods."
Children of the Heavens
The highborn, also known as aasimar and planetouched, are a race of humanoids with a divine spark from the higher planes in their ancestry. They can appear among any race, whether humans, elves, dwarves, etc., regardless of immediate parentage or racial makeup. The aasimar have gifts from on high due to their divine ancestry, often manifesting in wings, innate holy magic, and a way of sensing the profane and unholy. Not all aasimar are paragons of goodness, though some cultures may hold them up as such, resulting in some becoming disillusioned with the perception altogether and turning to a more cynical or even nefarious lifestyle.
Ascendancy
In general, highborns are rare, and they do not form communities with those of their own kind. There is one exception: the religious beliefs of the denizens of the
Kingdom of Halorest affirm reincarnation, believing that the best souls will eventually reincarnate into aasimar, who are the heads of their society. This stems from the belief that the folk of that kingdom were previously true angels, celestials who served the gods, who fell from grace and must work their way back through toil and reincarnation. Aasimar elsewhere do not necessarily hold this view.
