The Forest of Arlenn

"It is believed that the Forest of Arlenn was originally part of the Great Forest of Arathar, severed in the late Dawn or early First Era by deforestation caused by human settlers. An important piece of evidence for this claim is the closeness of the Feywild to Arlenn, a phenomenon primarily seen within Arathar. This closeness is commonly cited as the cause for the creation of the Feyscar and accursed nature of the forest following the extermination of the Arlennic Fey brought about by Calinden Myfrandi and his army. Exploration of Arlenn is at one's one peril as the forest itself seems to rage against the crimes committed beneath its boughs."   Forests of Nesia, by Lenoril Falinef

History

The Building of Celenen
In the final year of the 8th century 1E, a primarily Star Elven army from the Celsani Hegemony was forced to retreat into Arlenn following a disastrous battle against the forces of Camirien during Alain's War. For weeks, the Elves were trapped in the woods unable to leave, at first in fear of being caught by a Camiric army but later having lost the ability to find their way out as the trees seemed to move on their own. As the scouts struggled to find a way to leave Arlenn, creatures of the Feywild tormented the Elven host for breaking ancient laws unknown to them. After weeks of supplies going missing, scouts and patrols being swallowed by the woods, and officers being driven insane, Calinden Myfrandi, the army's commander, finally gave in to the advice of one of his Wood Elven officers and ordered a campaign of extermination to be carried out against the Fey of Arlenn.   Over the following months, the Elves ruthlessly hunted down every Fey creature they could find. They set fire to vast swathes of the forest to lure them into slaughters and Star Elven mages found a way to bind the spirits of slain Fey to the Material Plane so that they would die permanently. This campaign came to an end when a company of scouts stumbled upon a place sacred to the Arlennic Fey and alerted the main host. Calinden saw this as the perfect opportunity to purge Arlenn of the Fey that had been tormenting them and began advancing on the site. Upon their arrival, they were immediately attacked by the remaining Fey. A long and bloody battle ensued that cost the lives of many Elves, but many creatures of the Feywild fell for every Elven life lost. The battle was ended when Calinden, with help from his guard, slew a Lord of Faerie, causing the creation of the Feyscar.   After the lords of the Celsani Hegemony learned of what Calinden and his army had done, they were exiled from the Hegemony's lands and forced to stay within Arlenn. The Elves built the city of Celenen and established a city-state based around their new home. As more Star Elves learned of what the Hegemony had done and sympathized with their exiled kin, they abandoned their homes and migrated to Arlenn, expanding Celenen and later founding the city of Arctasel. The City-State of Celenen has became the new home of the Star Elven people and nearly all living Star Elves can trace their ancestry back to the city.   The Poison of Arctasel
At an unknown point in the late 13th century 1E, the young green dragon Vosith moved into eastern Arlenn after losing a fight with a red dragon. The dragon made her lair in the hollow of a massive twisted tree near to the city of Arctasel and became known as the Maimed Virulence on account of injuries that left her left wing tattered and useless in flight. Over the following decades, Vosith took the form of a Star Elf named Cetdaya and began poisoning the minds of Arctasel's leaders, enthralling them and turning them against both the city of Celenen and each other.   This came to an end in early 1339 1E when a group of adventurers exposed her corruption of Castellan Salasta Mirdan, the governor of Arctasel. Upon being alerted of what was transpiring, the council of Celenen hired the adventurers and an order of roaming Casvalian knights to slay Vosith while Celeneni forces prevented her followers in Arctasel from interfering. The adventurers first battled Vosith while she was attempting to rally her followers to arms against Celenen but, despite their victory, the dragon was able to escape. They tracked her to her lair where she licked her wounds and fought her again. Many of their knightly allies fell in the struggle, but Vosith was slain and the adventurers were blessed with a portion of her power. As the dragon's corruption faded in the days following her death, the Arctaseli officials Vosith had enthralled were investigated and dismissed from office, some ended up disappearing.
