Hilenia

Hilenia is a religious sect worshipping the Goddess Hilene, considering her to be the ideal of which all should strive to be. It is a sect of the Myriad; the primary religion followed by Merinians.

Mythology & Lore

Centuries ago, during the Endless Night, a great blight touched the land. Crops did not grow, fish were dead and dry, meat was rotten the moment it was cut from the bone. Children died at birth and the people grew sick and helpless, begging any who would listen for an end to their suffering.
A woman was born amidst this terror, growing strong in the protection of her parents. She saw the blight her people suffered and vowed her entire life to bring it to an end. When she reached adulthood she left her home, seeking the source of the blight -- which she found in the deepest, darkest edges of the wilderness, where no light shone. A great beast lurked in the shadows, poisoning the rivers, and she slay this beast with nought but a branch she had whittled into a spear, piercing the creature's heart and ensuring it would never torment her people again.
She returned home with the corpse of the creature, showing it to her people and promising they would be fed by its meat until the crops healed and the waters ran clear again. The people celebrated her, naming her Saint Hilene and vowing she would recieve the finest cuts of the beast's body.
When Hilene feasted on the beast's rich meat, something called to her from the darkness, begging her to return to shadow. She did not fall into temptation, instead cutting the heart from the beast's chest and taking a great bite from the organ, absorbing its power for her own and purifying it from within. Hilene's body was torn apart from the force of its power, and the town lay her to rest beneath a great statue erected to honour her, where she will cast her light on the people forever more.
