Hoshizora Chiku
Hoshizora Chiku {starry sky district}
at this time all 300 chiku are 1.87 million square kilometers
resident population total 6100
this is a somewhat typical representation of a chiku without metropolitan areas on Nejiro barring geography and climate
The Hoshizora Chiku has a temperate climate with winter lows of negative three degrees celsius and an average of one hundred thirty centimeters of intermittent snow accumulation, with as many as five major snowfalls that blanket the mountains in some of the best ski powder on the planet. Summers are warm, with highs up to thirty five degrees celsius, that are often humid, which bring severe thunderstorms with high winds, heavy rainfall, intense lightning, hail, and sometimes tornado activity. Spring and autumn bring many days of clear skies, and thousands of hours of sunshine along with a large variety of flowering plants and colorful foliage. The geography is more than slightly active and full of several types of mountain ranges from fold to volcanic, wide valleys, rivers, forests, waterfalls, artesian springs, hot springs, and lakes. There are enormous herds of elk, deer, aknata (large native prehistoric bison that are lightly furred and bearded with a massive pair of curved horns on its head and bony ridges from its skull to midspine to protect the spinal cord, it stands up to four meters at the shoulder and weighs up to three metric tons, domesticated breeds may be milked, and produce up to one point three metric tons of edibles), antelope, pronghorns, wild boar, great ostriches, horses, and bighorn sheep grazing on splendid fields of native grasses and wild flowers. There are forests of trees with a multitude of wildlife such as coywolves, tanuki (raccoon masked canid), falcons, owls, cougars, deer, niji snakes {iridescent, rainbow} (venomous), hotaru {firefly}, novosaurs (native feathered and scaled 'velociraptors' that stand about one meter tall, a cohesive cru {family group - usually three to five, but as many as nine} working together may bring down an elk or juvenile aknata), wherries, moose, direwolf, black bears, swans, cranes, trout, bass, and dreigiau cymru {welsh dragon, small feathered and scaled 'lizards', most with flight, with carnivore and herbivore subspecies, none are bigger than one meter tall or long). a subspecies of the dreigiau cymru are 'fire lizards' living on some tropical islands of the northern hemisphere
Beneath the chiku is the Redian Caldera, a hot spot that measures over thirty three thousand square kilometers, it sits under the planet's crust and is thought to have initiated about twenty four million years ago. It is powered by a plume of hot, but not molten material that may extend as deep as the boundary between the planetary mantle and core. It last erupted about seven hundred twenty five thousand years ago. The activity of the hotspot has greatly contributed to the development of the Sunlight Mountains, The Kyariko Yama {calico mountains}, the Chian Yama {a native red grape varietal}, the Senotakai Matsuyama {tall pine mountains}, and the Cascadia Range.
One of the better known features of the chiku, located on Mt. Horaiji {seasons treasure mountain}, is the Sakura Onsen National Heritage Site. Mt. Horaiji is the remains of a fifteen million year old volcano of five peaks with exposed ryholite, that is six hundred ninety five meters above sea level located in the southwest sector of the chiku in the Sunlight Mountains. Sakura Onsen {cherry blossom hot springs} which originated (and still exists) as a Phoenix Industries employee retreat, then expanded into a leisure and recreational area for the Saganami Dai Ichizoku. It is favoured for the beautiful and tranquil scenery, especially appreciated during hanami and koyo {leaf hunting}. It has many traditionally styled ryokan {inn} and minshuku {bed and breakfast} with their ofuro {communal hot spring bathing areas} and kaiseki {light meals of seasonal and regional specialties}. Word of mouth spread and demand urged another expansion of both property and access. So in 2864 the new resort area opened on property adjacent to the original retreat, also called Sakura Onsen, to general reservations with the addition of restaurants, boutiques, and outdoor leisure activities, with a station for the Hoshizora Scenic Railway, and an expanded airfield. On the fiftieth anniversary of the resort the Natsu Matsuri {summer festival} with traditional shrine rituals to the local kami, float processions, musicians, dances, theatrical performances, athletic competitions, feasts, games, and fireworks was held for two weeks in July in thanks and celebration, and has continued every summer since. The resort property expanded multiple times in the following decades as a number of small guard gated communities, with vacation properties and rentals were added, as well as properties leased to other Ichizoku to develop as leisure areas themselves under strict guidelines to keep the landscape unspoiled. In 2972 the whole area was proclaimed a National Heritage Site by Parliament and additional plots of land were set aside as nature preserves and leisure and recreation areas for each of the then currently existing Ichizoku. In recent decades private industry has built several successful hotel resorts and spas on nearby properties.
Another favored location in the chiku is the Hoshizora no Shizen Hogo Kokuritsu Koen {starry sky nature preserve national park}. The park is one hundred thousand square kilometers, located within the Cascadia Range near the center of the chiku. There are a total of 256 NPO Wylde Rangers, and Forestry Service Park Rangers stationed in the park. There is also a Nejiro Fire Brigade Wildland Firefighting unit that includes RAWS (remote operated weather stations in geostationary orbit), hotshot crews, smokejumpers, helitack crews, airtankers, hand and engine crews. The park attractions include numerous gorges, canyons, forests, mountain peaks, hot springs, mineral pools, and geysers. Park amenities accomodate a large variety of visitors with facilities from primitive campsites to glamping campgrounds to private rental cabins and chalets. There is a wide range of activities including hiking, skiing, horseback riding, cycling, climbing, spelunking, ballooning, hang gliding, kiting, adventure races, birdwatching, scavenger hunts, mazes and labyrinths, orienteering, rope courses, rafting, fishing, and canoeing. Especially popular is the Hoshizora Hogo-ku {dark sky sanctuary} which has a planetarium, and two of the five telescope observatories open to public viewing and amateur astronomy. Another popular site in the park is Sweetwater Falls, a forty three meter wide multi-tiered waterfall with sixteen, four to ten meter vertical drops in a zigzag course over thirty nine meters of the Sweetwater River that then plummets another fifty two meters into a large seventy seven meter deep plunge pool, the water then continues on to class four whitewater rapids. The Sweetwater River eventually merges with the Long He {dragon river} in the next chiku, Yubokumin {nomad}, just over the northern border of the Hoshizora Chiku. Some other must see attractions in the park are, Raven Rock a naturally bare large rock face composed mostly of limestone leaning at a forty five degree angle overlooking the Aille River {cliff} within the Aille River Gorge, the rock is over eighty meters tall and has massive cliffs on three sides, there is one trail to the top which has the most spectacular views in the area. The Cave Ampitheatre has deep crevices home to several species of carnivorous bats, and Ishinoki Hashi is a natural sandstone bridge which resembles a petrified tree that has fallen over. The park has three large railroad stations combining several rail lines coming from various points of the continent, the farthest being the city of Port, the closest (outside the chiku) is the town of Madina in the Yubokumin Chiku to the north. The park is home to the Hoshizora Scenic Railway, a luxurious experience with every amenity imaginable which has routes that spiral and crisscross through the park and then the chiku, it offers regular service schedules for all routes - traveling an average of fifty five kilometers per hour, with as many as fifty coaches that have specially designed extra large windows that curve over the roofs of the cars, so that not one centimeter of the picturesque scenery is missed. The train route within the park is often sold out during hanami, and momijigari {red leaf hunting}, also for meteor showers and other astronomical events. The Hoshizora Scenic Railway also operates trains with just chair coaches as public transportation within the chiku, at slightly higher speeds on regular schedules. There are also two small regional airfields near the north and south entrances of the park.
The Chukan Kawa {middle river} rapids (class four to six) feeds the Anheru Taki {angel waterfalls} with a flow rate of two hundred fifty four thousand three hundred twenty six cubic meters per second, then plunges five hundred seventy six meters over a rock face nine hundred seventeen meters wide, then finally the water gently flows into Tentai Mizumi {celestial lake}. The falls were named Anheru, because the natural rock arches that the water flows over, combined with the intensity of the movement of the water and subsequent vapors make the falls resemble multiple large white wings outstretched for flight. The hydropower plant, built inside the cliffs, provides electricity primarily for the chiku in which it resides, but also for customers from Baja to Lanikai, and for customers from Leaf to Stonehaven. The falls are one of the most admired sights on Nejiro and is a popular tourist destination of the northwestern sector of the chiku. Another popular destination is Tentai Mizumi. The second largest freshwater lake on Nejiro is thirty nine thousand five hundred seventy square kilometers and three hundred fifty four meters deep. Sailing and surfing are the most popular pastimes on the lake. The lake holds one hundred and fifty three identified fish species including salmon and sturgeon. The fields along the shore have many varieties of suisen {water wizard, daffodil}, and the basin is filled with forests of oak, hickory, beech, maple, mulberry, and juniper. The lake gets its name for its phenomenal, breathtaking, impression - 'for on still nights it holds heavens vaults beneath its depths'.
Near the northern border of the chiku are the Chian Yama, named after the prolific native varietal of grapes (with deep red skin and red flesh) found growing there. In the Teliani Valley there is a mild climate with many mineral rich springs - optimal conditions for wine making. There is even cyperus papyrus growing wild around the ponds and springs. It is the home of award winning artisanal estate winery Chateau Mukhnari {oak grove}. The estate currently owns five thousand acres on which it cultivates white varietals like Kakheti, Mtsvane, Rkatsiteli, Bodbe, Gareji, and red varietals like Saperavi, Akhasheni, Khvanchkara, Kindzmarauli, Mukuzani, Usakhelauri, and Chian with the maglari method. The estate has a few labels under which it produces wine; the first is Orgo {the eternity of the sun living in a bottle}, a favorite of connoisseurs and sommeliers, that produces artisanal wine using the ancient qvevri method with amphora jars, that also bottles amber wines. The next is the Teliani Valley label that bottles wines produced from modern methods using computer controlled robotic vats, and from traditional barrel methods. The Teliani Valley label is also used for meads, juices, vinegars, jams, raisins, honey products, and table grapes produced by the estate. And the Chateau Mukhnari label is used for its limited, and special edition wines and for its reserve, extra old, and Hors d'age brandy production. The estate handles all its own production needs from grape cultivation to bottling - they even make their own labels from their own paper, and their own cases. So, as well as the usual winery workers and machinery, the estate also maintains its own apiaries, quarries, kilns, potters, glassworks, coopers, kitchen gardens, carpenters, presses, printers, machine shops, garages, technicians, engineers, and foresters. The winery maintains a vast underground cellar network for the aging and storing of wines and spirits, a laboratory, and several warehouses. The estate has its own private security force, Kolkha, that provides armed security guards for access control of physical and cyber spaces, integrated security systems, surveillance and process monitoring, roving patrols of the entire estate with dogs, resource protection, emergency services, and convoy escorts. Kolkha is also contracted to two small, nearby private guard gated communities on property owned by the Mukhnari family in the hills overlooking the vineyard. The estate winery is a sought after stop on the Hoshizora Scenic Railway and runs regular tours, tasting events, and other social and corporate events. The estate itself does occasionally host weddings and other social events in either the Chateau's formal gardens, or one of its ballrooms, libraries, or wine cellar. The estate will celebrate its hundredth anniversary in March 3069.
The oldest settlement in the chiku is the Circle G Ranch, privately owned by the Galt {boar, irish/norman descent} family since 2840. Located in the eastern sector of the chiku in the Senotakai Matsuyama, the ranch is currently five hundred fifty six thousand and eighty eight acres. The Galt family regularly adds more parcels every decade or so. In 2963 the Galt family successfully petitioned Parliament to charter the Circle G Station village, near the southwestern border of the ranch, to facilitate movement of freight and tourism, and now the rail station regularly accommodates seven different passenger and freight railway lines, including two bullet trains. Currently the village holds the Chiku Jimusho {district office} of the Common House MP Hanae Chen, Meritous {ranked member of the Civil Service}, Jinshi {advanced scholar}, Tanhua {flower snatcher, ranked third in her last testing year}. The ranch runs an average of eighteen thousand head of organic grass fed bison, plus another eighteen thousand head of various breeds of organic grass fed domestic and native cattle. The mine, Iyashitochowa {healing and harmony}, produces an average of two point seven million carats per year and is expected to produce that for at least another sixty years. The Galt family has both in-house security and has contracted with Canopy PMC to protect all the Galt family resources. The Circle G ranch house is built near the western shore of Suzumushi Loch {bell cricket lake}, a large sprawling homestead of timbers and stone in Gleann Fada {long valley} overlooking several acres of wildflowers and the home pastures.
On the eastern shore of Suzumushi Loch, at the edge of the Circle G Ranch's sixteen thousand acre hunting reserve, the Galt family owns and operates the Tintinnabulum Hunting Lodge {a bell}. Morning Glory Lake is located in the southeastern sector of the chiku. The third largest freshwater lake on Nejiro is twenty seven thousand eight hundred ninety six square kilometers, and four hundred nine meters deep. The average surface temperature is sixteen degrees celsius, and in the summer the temperature may rise to highs of a toasty twenty to twenty one degrees celsius. The lake has more than fourteen hundred kilometers of sandy beaches, two rocky grottos with caves on its westernmost shore, and colossal cliffs along its northeastern shore. There are forests of oak, hickory, dogwood, magnolia, beech, maple, sakura, cedar, forest pansy, mulberry, and juniper trees surrounding the shores of the lake on all sides. Days with high winds combined with the deep water provide excellent surfing conditions with waves in excess of five meters. Be advised wetsuits or drysuits are highly recommended along with a thicker freshwater board. There is a longstanding argument concerning the name of the lake, some argue the name is derived from the shape of the lake as seen from the air it is said it resembles an unfurling morning glory blossom. Some argue that the name is derived from the abundance of morning glory blossoms in the fields around the lake. They have been arguing the point for over eight hundred years and there is no sign of ceasing. Recently, approximately thirteen hundred kilometers south of Circle G Station, and about fifteen hundred kilometers east of Sakura Onsen, the probationary koichizoku Starfall has begun to establish its landhold near the western shore of the lake. The new probationary koichizoku landhold boundaries are just over twenty five kilometers of the western lakeshore of Morning Glory Lake, then it runs through part of Larkspur Prairie to the west, and part of Cibola Forest {buffalo} to the east. To the north the landhold boundaries are in the Silesia Foothills in the west and in between the lowlands and uplands of the Kyariko Yama to the east.
