Nation of Gerlander

A once great warrior nation! They were once mighty but fell nearly a century ago to Solaria due to their own infighting. Not many citizens resent this as it brought peace to them, the nobles however wish to be the strongest nation of this Empire. Gerlander is well known for their gemstones and ore, exporting much to to Solaria and Romalia. They are far more spread out than even Autusgurg. The only thing that works as a Capital is Beleren on the tall cliffs of the same name to the north. The buildings are mostly carved into stone inside of large pit mines.   Unlike the other countries they do not have a single centralized Jarl , they are ruled by Albert Ironthorn IX, leader of Ironmark. The stout dwarf is aging and worrying of his succession. As the most powerful man, he is the great warrior of his people and holds his position with an iron fist. He is jovial despite this and is always willing to make jokes at his own expense but more than likely at others. Who would threaten a man with a sword the size of an orc?

Structure

Gerlander is ruled by one who is Jarl in title only. All power is split evenly between the three main cities and their noble houses. These Lords and Ladies vy for political supremacy in their respective cities so that they may be chosen by the other houses to lead the cities and eventually lead their nation as Jarl.   Bellow them are the House's respective Barons/Baronesses and their Viscounts/Viscountesses. The Barons run the businesses of the Lords and Ladies to their wishes and answers only to them. These are all usually family in some way.

Culture

The citizens themselves have grown warry of the generations of war. And thus support the Empire and their method of keeping the Nobles in line. Despite this, a hint of national pride does ring true for those Dwarves and Gnomes who were born and raised Gerlander.    Each city thinks they're the best and dislike outsiders, particularly Drow. But they will not be hostile or stand by while crimes are committed against an outsider.

Public Agenda

Strength is prized amongst all else. This can be paradoxical at times. Such as; Unregulated anger or violence is considered a sign of weakness. But being so kind that everyone walks over you or wont fight back is also considered weak. As such, the attitude of Gerlandians is one of respect earned.   "A powerful blade cannot have all heft at the tip, nor at the hilt. Balance is the mark of ones true strength." ~The Allhammer.

Assets

Their wealth is almost entirely valued by ore mining and metal production. This equals out to financial success.

History

Many thousands of years ago, dwarves and Gnomes lived in the limited mountain ranges to the west of what is now known as Gerlander. In their mines however, an incursion had begun. The Drow had broken into the Material Plane and began kidnapping people to bring into their fold as slave labor. It is here duergar and deep Gnomes came to be.    The people fled to the open plains and began mining for materials to fight back and retake their home. Many argued over what method should be taken. One Dwarven man however silenced them all. Gerlander had come to their meeting place, a fortified iron mine, with an army of mechanized mining machines he outfitted for war. He had hidden away in a citadel deep within the mountains and built an army. With this impressive force they stood behind him, and eventually crowned this dwarf, King Gerlander the Warforger.   Mining in the plains began ramping up to feed this warforged army's creation, eventually the mines became cities onto themselves and the Drow began invading as they dug deeper.    Eventually a rebel group of drow had made themselves known and through their cooperation, they unleashed a devastating weapon upon the Belkan mountain range. It rendered the mountains all but impassable. And Gerlander was the one to do it. The location almost wiped out the warforged as well. King Gerlander would forces bear the name, Gerlander the Martyred. The conflict was also dubbed thr Generation of Blood and Iron.   From there, his three children fought over who had the rights to be the next King or Queen. They retreated to cities and began waging a generations long war against one another in a succession crisis. Multiple times during the crisis, one city would take control or another before they would be forced to abdicate to another.   This would rage on for nearly two thousand years before Farcina, tired of the war spilling over into their lands patitioned the growing Solarian Empire for aid. The people of Gerlander were all sick of the fighting as well. So when the Empire crushed their armies, morale was so low that the people accepted defeat. Without the people's support the noble houses all followed suit or were purged.   Now a system of rotating governance has been established. Every ten years one of the three major cities leaders assend to the head of state, Jarl, before passing it peacefully to the next. Who the leader of the cities becomes is up to the noble houses. Their only stipulation is that they do not resort to mustering troops or murdering one another. And that is how it has been for nearly three hundred years.

Demography and Population

Gerlander is primarily populated by dwarves and gnomes. The further south east you go from the Belkan Mountains, the more diverse things get. Further to the east is where Elves of all kinds have migrated. Closer to their southern border you can find a mix of firbolgs and humans.

Military

Gwrlander dose not have a standing army. Each city must call up troops or press citizens into service.

Gerlander is about to begin a full blow mecha-magic revolution. Their mining machines are powered by steam boiled from fire crystals. But some have discovered that manipulating steam with a rune of control water, can make their machinery work stronger and more efficiently.

Foreign Relations

They are a reluctant participant in the Council of Nine. They are not hostile to any of the other nations of the Empire but act like their opinion is the best.    There are only two nations they actively dislike. Romalia and Beldan. Despite Beldan being a big reason they won their war against the Drow, their relations slowly went cold. They feel threatened by their advanced technology and do what they can to out do them, but fail.   Romalia is disliked because their mages and Psy-Knights. They were instrumental in the invasion and subsequent occupation by the Empire. The mages of Gerlander are not as skilled as their society focused more on martial skills.

Laws

Gerlanded follows the typical laws of common decency. Thievery, rape, murder, kidnapping, and so on are all punishable with fines and jail time.   Laws unique to them follow the Guild of the Allhammer.
  • Stealing something made by that person is more harshly punished than regular thievery. They hold items made by the craftsman to be almost holy.

Gerlander has very poor agricultural. The most they have are sheep heards and fields of root vegetables. They are the Empire's top importers of meats and spices.   Their industry is centered almost entirely on ore refining, stone quarries and metallurgy. They export raw mattiriels and metal goods to everyone around. But they also export gem stones, primarily to Romalia.

Trade & Transport

Only the Capital city of Beleren has a spireport to accommodate airship traffic but it is also the thunder rail hub for the whole nation.    The fastest method of transport across Gerlander is by Thunder Rail. However the city of Umbrite is not connected to the rail line.

Education

The higher education of Gerlander consists if martial skills like smithing and mechanical engineering. There is one Magic College in Umbrite.   There is a general education system provided by the Empire that they participates in.

Infrastructure

Gerlander's infrastructure consists of dirt roads and thunder rail lines going across the nation. The roads in cities are all paved and there are plenty of cable cars connecting sides of the pit style city.   They pump their water from underground rivers and lakes. Except for the Capital of Beleren where they use a massive Archimedes Screw to pull water from the lake.
