Mitleria - The World Of The Story

Geography

Mitleria is a world with three main landmasses. They are divided into The Thumb, The Fingers, and The Palm. These regions are inhabited by humans, celestials, and infernals.

Mitleria
The world of Mitleria, where The Mit and The Billows is set.

The Thumb

The Thumb is volcanically active, and has soaring temperatures that make it difficult for normal humans to live in the area. Celestials are not fond of the dirty atmosphere of ash and burning brimstone, they see themselves above those kinds of living conditions even though the temperatures pose no issues to them. The infernals have colonized The Thumb and established their own country, they specialize in mining materials that are only found in the region and are tolerated because they make themselves useful. Within the region humans and celestials are treated only as a rarity, but not with hostility. It is commonly assumed that humans and celestials who come to The Thumb have no resentment or prejeduce against infernals.

The Fingers

The last refuge for humans. The Fingers were established as a safe haven for the remaining human population of Mitleria after the Celestial Reckoning. This region was rebuilt into a country by the remaining human population and over the last 300 years it has seen significant growth and development. The people in The Fingers view celestials and infernals with equal amounts of fear and mistrust. After their numbers were decimated in the battles between the two variants to gain total control over the world the humans were treated as battle fodder and so neither side is particularly well liked.

Arded is a pretty average human. Their naming conventions are simple and parents will choose from a wide variety of influences. Family names are passed down either from a mother or father's side depending on the family and region.

Love is a red infernal. Naming conventions for infernals are different from regular humans, either choosing a virtue, vice, or pertaining to luck. Common names are: Fortune, Temperance, Prudence, Diablo, Fortuna, Joy, etc.

The Palm

The Palm is home to the celestials of Mitleria. They are a haughty and self righteous bunch, who view all other people as beneath them. Their percieved superiority was the main cause of the wars that defined the Celestial Reckoning. They continue a propaganda campaign to paint humans as less capable than celestials and infernals as villainous devils, while declaring themselves the sole redeeming feature of humanity. There are some cases of celestials who don't follow these beliefs and will travel out of The Palm to seek knowledge and a more diverse understanding of the world around them.

Celestial naming conventions lean toward heavenly sounding names, such as Celine, Apollo, Solana, etc.

The Celestial Reckoning

Before infernals and celestials there were only humans and the world of Mitleria was whole and unbroken. A great earthquake split the land and a great power was released from the world's core. The natural disaster left families split, flooded entire regions, and left the newly separated Thumb a volcanic wasteland. Alongside this great splitting some humans found themselves changed after this mysterious power flooded the world and celestials and infernals came to be.

In the wake of these changes and the rise of a new population of infernals and celestials fear spread through the land and the people were divided further. This fear became the driving force behind fierce fighting between the three variants and 100 years of unrest and bloodshed defined the era. Rumours burned through the lands and no one was able to trust anyone else. It wasn't until the humans, celestials, and infernals all decided to settle the three newly separated regions that Mitleria finally knew peace, uneasy as it was. 300 years later there is still mistrust between the three regions and no sign of it being resolved any time soon.

Author's Musings:

***This world was originally based on the concept that this story was written by a sentient oven mitt who is also a king of kobolds in a dungeons and dragons game. This original pitch came from the wonderful anvilite, MandoMc. I have expanded on the world and I am working on creating a fictional space that can live within a fictional space...it's basically fic-ception at this point.

World building should have been the first step last time! Over-all it feels simple but it's better than what was there before! Building up a basic idea (even if it's simple and straightforward) can help with story progression and building in some believablity. This is especially important to remember for word counts people unfamiliar with your setting!

Remembering a story doesn't happen in a vacuum is an important step to creation, and charcter reflections about social structures, world scale conflicts, and other unique details of your world can help the reader connect with the story more. It's also helpful for stretching out the story to hit those goals!

I love fic-seption. I think it's a fun thing to do. I wonder how deep we could go?

I want to do a story for the rainbow winged Celestial in this article...her name is Celiana...also, let me get my back-hoe, how far do you want to go?

Perhaps Celiana is an author as well. You could do a story about her struggling to come up with her next great story.
