Dragonborn

Monster or Man?

"Si tepoha ekess oli majak, astahii tira ve." / "I have but my blood to give, as lo did before me."
— A solemn dragonborn oath of service or loyalty.
Dragonborn, also known as the Draushril in draconic, are a race of sentient humanoids native to the Material Plane. Known for their distinctive draconic appearance and weaponized breath, they remain relatively isolated from the rest of the world, holed up in isolated (yet sometimes formidable) communities scattered around Naephemon.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The specifics of dragonborn anatomy vary widely depending on their ancestry, although most share similar traits. They have a humanoid torso with two arms and two legs, although the hands and feet are more reptilian and end in claws.   Their head is similar to their draconic ancestors, with a blunt snout and a pair of horns, although, once again, the specifics vary according to ancestry. (A green dragonborn, for instance, will often have a slender face and waving spines upon their head, whereas a white dragonborn will be likely to have a teardrop-shaped head and a sharp, hard crest.) This variety also extends to their scales, for while all dragonborn have scales, the scales themselves will bear resemblance to their draconic ancestor.   Dragonborn may have a tail or not, although this is often genetic, and dragonborn with a tail will often share one with their close family members. Very rarely, a dragonborn may even possess wings, although cases like this are particularly exceptional, and dragonborn with wings are held in high religious or political esteem within their clans.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Due to their draconic forefathers, dragonborn possess a number of capabilities. The most notable is, perhaps, the dragonborn breath weapon, which can stretch from fifteen feet to nearly thirty. Dragonborn will have different breath weapons based on their ancestry, but all are dangerous, from black dragonborn's acid to the white dragon's cold, and all should be treated with caution.   Aside from this, dragonborn are particularly resilient against various types of dangers, although this again goes in accordance with their ancestry. Gold and red dragonborn are particularly resilient against tongues of fire, whereas bronze and blue dragonborn can be electrocuted with voltage that would kill any other creature and walk away a bit dazed.

Civilization and Culture

History

Draconic Age

The dragonborn are an ancient race; perhaps the oldest of all the humanoids. Their origins come from the Age of Dragons, where they were created as slaves to serve their dragon masters. The oldest dragonborn texts say that in those days, dragonborn were created in dark magic rituals by dragons desiring the use of slave labor. These ideas coalesce with general scholar consensus, for most agree that dragons were the first users of magic, and dragonborn slaves would be particularly useful in serving their whims.   These ancient dragonborn were often crafted in the image of their creator, with red dragonborn bearing horns on their jaw and silver dragonborn donning beautiful frills. Although some dragons would later reject the use of slaves, at one point or another, all dragons crafted dragonborn, and those dragonborn ancestors persist to this day.

The Giant Age

As the giants came to rule and the dragons began to fall out of power, dragonborn were able to gain access to freedom, and many fled into clans with their fellow slaves. As a dragon stronghold typically consisted of only one type of dragon, these new clans were incredibly homogenous, and many dragonborn developed only in the company of those with similar ancestry.   Despite their newfound freedom, many dragonborn were forced into hiding immediately after the Draconic Age. The giant successors following the dragons ruthlessly hunted and persecuted the dragonborn, seeing them as a lasting symbol of the previous draconic rulers. As such, many dragonborn lived in sheltered clans whilst trying to preserve their numbers and way of life, and it wasn't until the fall of the giants that dragonborn culture truly began to flourish.
