Artificial Gills
Artificial gills are the most common genetic modification, allowing a soul to be able to take in oxygen from surrounding water. By splicing human DNA with that of aquatic creatures, the body will lose its lungs and develop gills on the neck, completely changing the way they breathe. Patients are assigned a transitionary chamber to transition them from breathing air to breathing liquid. The chambers are filled with perfluorocarbon and other PFCs, liquids with a high oxygen content, that the patient will be submerged in for the next 5 to 10 hours. Patients are anesthetized before entry to the chamber as the process of respiratory transition is extremely painful for the first 30 minutes to an hour. After exiting from the chamber, the body will immediately and instinctively adapt to its new way of breathing, making this one of the simplest and shortest genetic modifications, not requiring any physical therapy. However, a drawback of artificial gills, compared to a respirator, is that the user loses their lungs, and is not amphibious. This is mostly seen as irrelevant though, as numerfolk rarely go above water.
