Porto Ahau Settlement in Myzelis | World Anvil

Porto Ahau

Ever since the first Ayain Tepeu, Ahau, conquered the Peninsula back in the Early States era, there was a dream for there to be a grand city founded at the mouth of the Yeh river for every Tepeu since. However, nature disagreed. The site of which to build the city flooded violently and often, and the flora and fauna was both hostile and sacred. Many attempts to establish a large and permanent settlement there failed. This isn't to say that there was never a population there, as Ayain have lived there as long as any place in the jungles, but the goal of making it a second Koloxal wasn't achieved until the Industrial Revolution.   When Sharadi was revealed, the Dos Lideres at the time saw an opportunity to cash in on a new market and decided to make a herculean effort to try once again to make Tepeu Ahau's dream come true. It held together for a time until a particularly powerful typhoon originating from the Brume hit the city in 1847 ISC, practically sinking an entire floating city block into the ocean, with the rest of the city not doing much better. The extent of the damage was so great, the Dos Lideres contracted the Imperial Infrastructure Corporation to rebuild the city which was a controversial move at the time. The CII didn't respect the build requirements that was instructed of them, and was instead built using brutalist design and industrialist sensibilities. The Ziggurats of the original build were preserved, but that was the last recognizable feature left of the city when CII was done with it. Despite protests from the population, which was heavily centered around ecology, the mega corporation was paid in full despite ignoring elements of the contract. While there was certainly pressure from the Arenian Empire to pay their state run company the agreed upon number, there was also speculation that the leaders of Aya-Valia secretly wanted the CII to build the city this way and to use them as a scapegoat.   After the bombs dropped, the city quickly devolved into chaos and anarchy, depleting it of it's large pre-war population at an alarming rate due to famine and violence. Those who stayed formed semi-tribal societies in different parts of the city and the surrounding wilderness, most well known ones being the 35th Street, Cambyas, the 21 Gang and the Torros. Shockingly, while the city has reorganized itself in this way, parts of the Autonomous Security system that was installed by the Ministry of Peace still functioned. It was referred to as the Paz, and mostly protected the Maior Fodido building. This was the status quo up until 2253, when the newly formed Confederation used much of the old Imperial military equipment from Depot 5 to take the city over, and forced every faction within the city to sign into the treaty.   With the Cartels in charge for about a century in a half, the city has seen a substantial explosion in population due to people from all across the peninsula have come to live in the city searching for a new life away from the dictatorships of the Juntas or the uncertainty and difficulty of rural or nomadic life. However, this rise in population amplified the problems of Cartel economic and legal policies. The economic competitiveness that they hoped for with their anarcho-capitalist policies certainly generated a high amount of productivity, however the micro-economies that emerged created a short period of unrest. Many of them began to violently confront each other despite them being under the cartel umbrella during the 2320's, causing a recession that the Cartels had to address. Each of the Cartels had to directly acquire these companies either through purchase or violent coercion, which gave rise to Etzil Arms, Fontes Bio-Technica, Zotz Areodynamics, and Neves Clothing Company. Despite the innumerable amount of issues this city experiences, and relatively high murder rate, the population still climbs because of its reputation as a place where one can make themselves fantastically rich, since Porto Ahau continues to serve as the financial and trade center for southern Talarena. Where any product and service can be found for the right price.   OVN TRAVEL ADVISORY: Due to unresolved issues with the Confederation, Republic citizens are barred from entering their territory. Nomad Fleets and Civilian vessels are also banned from sailing in what is determined to be Confederation waters.
