Monk: Sonic Strummer

Way of the Sonic Strummer

Originating from the shores of Termina, the Way of the Sonic Strummer originated from the gifted musicians of the legendary Indigo-Go's band among the Zoras. Monks who follow this path wield their guitars as extensions of their beings, channeling their ki through harmonious chords and fervent melodies. With each strike of their instrument, the monks become conduits of sonic energy, shaping the battlefield by the intensity and rhythm of their music.

Shredding the Strings

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Performance and the guitar. When you make a check with either skill, you can use your Wisdom modifier instead of your Charisma modifier.   Furthermore, you can use the guitar as a Monk weapon and a conduit for your Ki. While you are holding it, your Guitar can function in one of two ways. If you swing the Guitar as a melee weapon, it has the same features as a Battleaxe, but the damage type is Lightning. If you strum the Guitar instead, it becomes a ranged weapon with a normal range of 60 feet and a long range of 100 feet and deals Wind damage equal to your Martial Arts dice.

Sonic Striker

Additionally at 3rd level, you can add an additional effect when you attack with your guitar. Once on your turn when you hit a creature with an attack with your guitar, you can expend a Ki point and play a powerful chord that resonates with your Ki. You can choose one of the following effects:
  • Distortion: The target has disadvantage on attack rolls on any creature except for you.
  • Vibrato: The target must make a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of you until the end of its next turn.
  • Bass Drop: The target must make a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Audience Participation

At 6th level, you gain additional options for Sonic Striker. When you hit a creature with an attack with your guitar, you can expend a Ki point to target a different creature within 30 feet that can hear you. A creature must make a Wisdom Saving Throw against your charm effect, but can choose to willingly fail the save. On a failure, the creature uses its reaction for one of the following effects that you choose:
  • Outro: The target moves up to half its speed in a direction you choose. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.
  • Slapback: The target makes a melee attack against a creature within its reach that you choose.
  • Tempo: The target takes the Dodge action until the start of its next turn.

Sonic Shockwave

At 11th level, your music becomes a force to be reckoned with. As a bonus action, you can play a thunderous chord on your instrument, releasing a shockwave of sound in a 30-foot cone. All creatures in that cone must make a Constitution saving throw. Creatures with other senses such as Tremorsense or Blindsight have disadvantage on the save.   On a failed save, they take Wind damage equal to three martial arts die + your Wisdom modifier and are pushed 10 feet away from you and cannot make opportunity attacks until the end of your next turn. On a successful save, they take half damage and aren't pushed. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest, or you expend 3 Ki points to use it again.

Lightshow

Additionally at 11th level, you can spend one minute playing your guitar to cast Programmed Illusion. You can cause this illusion to cast bright light for a hundred feet and dim light for an additional fifty feet. Once you have cast this spell with this feature, you cannot cast it again until you complete a long rest.

Encore

At 17th level, you can combine the effects of Sonic Striker and Audience Participation. When you hit a creature with your guitar, you can expend 2 Ki points and pick an effect of Sonic Striker and target another creature with Audience Participation as part of the same attack. Moreover, the damage of the attack is increased by an additional Martial Arts die.   Additionally, when you miss an attack with your guitar, you can immediately follow up with additional attack as part of the same attack. You can benefit from this only once per turn.
