Prosthetic Pen

It's definitely an unwieldy bastard of a tool.  I could barely write a single letter with it at first.  But, over time, you learn to use the thing properly.  Would be much easier if I could afford the extra for a proper one, but as a run-of-the-mill historian what am I going to do?  Can't mortgage this hut twice.

Utility

Prosthetic pens are used to allow those who have lost a hand to continue to be able to spellwrite.  Although the loss of a hand is much less common in Mythia today, in the past it was a widespread problem due to the dangerous nature of many lines of work, as well as settlement proximity to Rifts.   Although typically used truly to better the lives of those who have lost a hand, or been born without one, prosthetic pens are looked upon suspiciously in the plains kingdoms due to their method of punishing those who write or use Agriwrits - amputation of one or both hands.  There is a reasonably heavy trade in prosthetic pens in order to circumvent this punishment, and those seen on the streets in these cities are often subject to brutality by law enforcement officials.
Access & Availability
Prosthetic pens are quite common in Mythia, especially among those who spellwrite as a side job or casually.  These people often suffer injuries to their hands in manufacturing or other similar jobs, which necessitate (or cause) amputation despite the many and varied ailmentwrits around today.  However, the quality of prosthetic pens varies immensely, and the more elaborate pieces are much less accessible due to their expense.
Complexity
Prosthetic pens increase in complexity (and effectiveness) with price.  The simplest is a cup, similar to that of a pirate hook, to which a pen is attached vertically to the side in a small tube.  These are very cumbersome and incredibly difficult to use, taking many years to become even somewhat able to write with.  The highest quality prosthetic pens, available only to nobility due to their expense, are often enchanted with spellwrits to allow them to be more flexible, giving their users much more versatility and freedom with their use.  They are also often held at an angle in a grip like that which would be produced by fingers, allowing the user more precision with movement.
