Dragonborn (Drah-gone-borne)

In the worlds of disc lie the dragons, mighty creatures and some of the first titans created by the gods during the age of dawn. Below them, are their children, the dragonborn.
Dragonborn are an orgulous people, proud and haughty, maybe too much so for their own good. Like the dragons who created them, dragonborn value wealth and power. This leads dragonborn settlements, most often lead by a single Dragon, or small group of dragons, to be self-reliant in the lair that is their home. While they still communicate and deal with others, it is usually more adversarial. Overtime however, the dealings dragonborn have had with outsiders have led to a loss of wings in most ancient bloodlines due to the mingling of blood that both dragonborn and dragons themselves have partaken in over the centuries.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Most dragonborn are bipedal, though some quadropedal dragonborn exist. Dragonborn possess thick scaly hides with heads resembling that of their closest draconic ancestors. Some have fins and most have horns, the shapes of these horns ranging from slick and curved to curly depending on their ethnicity. Dragonborn possess clawed hands and feet with their hands having 3 fingers and a thumb, and their feet having three toes then a fourth higher up on their ankle. Most dragonborn possess tails, and some possess wings. These used to be traits inherant to all dragonborn that some would rarely lack, but now through breeding with other species tails have become slightly less common and wings have become a rarity.

Genetics and Reproduction

The first form of reproduction for dragonborn is for a Dragon to bury one of its teeth in a place of elemental power then give some of their own primal energy through use of a breath weapon. From there, 29 months later a baby dragonborn will dig its way out of the ground. These dragonborn have the highest chance of being born with wigns and tails. The second form of reproduction is the standard sexual way of many races. The gestation period is typically about 13 months before the mother then lays an egg. This egg then takes roughly another 16 months to hatch.   In terms of genetics dragonborn will take traits from both parents and pass them down. The main traits passed down in dragonborn besides standard things such as eye colour, are their horn length and shape, scale colours, and breath weapons. A dragonborn may only inherit a single Type-A breath weapon which is usually from their mother, but in rare cases passed from their father instead. Some dragonborn also possess Type-B breath weapons such as paralasis gas which they may inherit from either parent in addition to the Type-A breath weapon. In most cases a dragonborn will be a colour mixed from both their parents scales but in rare cases can take a predominant colour usually based on their father, which is then dappled with scales from their mother.   Dragonborn hybrids will typically take more draconic traits than that of their other race, but the most likely traits to be passed down are their scales, claws, and breath weapon.

Biological Cycle

Within hours of their hatching from either earth or egg, a dragonborn gains the ability to walk before becoming like that of an older child by the age of 3 and reaching physical maturity at the age of 15. A dragonborn will then usually reach emotional maturity by 18 and live to around 120. Dragonborn will usually stay in their physical prime throughout the majority of their life before aging much much faster in their last few years of life.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dragonborn are spread all about the plane of disc under both subjugation and mentorship by dragons. Most ethnicities of dragonborn will be inclined more to places that fit the primal and elemental energy within them. Fire dragonborn are typically in hotter areas, acid dragonborn in swamps, cold dragonborn in colder locations, storm dragonborn in stormy cliffs and seas, and poison dragonborn in jungles.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

A dragonborn is typically named by a dragon leading the settlement they are in. The names given are usually Draconic words for concepts such as beauty and bloodlust, or jobs such as hunter and gatherer. Dragonborn from more respected families and dragonborn who are direct descendants of dragons are often given true dragon names which set them apart from others. True dragon names are usually shorter and more grandiose, and they come with a title of sorts. Since dragons are born knowing their name, these respected names typically come from deceased dragons of the past for dragonborn.

Gender Ideals

Because of their parent race's more relaxed views on gender, the dragonborn have inherited that. They still recognise gender, male, female, man, woman, but they see these as fluid things that are more up to the individual than anyone else, things that can even change overtime, or things that some people may be outside of. In terms of clothing and physical appearance, there is not very much visible difference.

Courtship Ideals

Food and shiny objects. Like their parents, dragonborn value food for sustenence, and shiny objects for the hoard. Most common dragonborn are not rich enough for entire hoards, but they still will gather whatever shiny or valuable objects they can and it is a very popular courtship to gift your quarry expensive or shiny objects, along with a preem meal.

Average Technological Level

Dragonborn currently live predominantly on class 4 worlds with medeival technologies and little to nothing above level 4 technology.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The standard language of dragonborn is Draconic, coming directly from their parents though some say dragonborn draconic is less dignified than the tongue of dragons.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Dragonborn inherit much of their culture from dragons and give much of their own to kobolds. This culture is built on regality and wealth, though is often a facade which hides the greed that lies in the heart of most dragons and has been passed down to many dragonborn.
Near all dragonborn want more wealth, near all dragonborn want to have hoards they can lay in.
The culture of dragonborn can vary from ethnicity and settlement but is predominantly grouped into two, metallic and chromatic.   In metallic culture dragonborn are seen as companions, and as children to the dragons above them. They are not equals but they are cared for and seen as important individuals who deserve to have a say. Metallic dragons will leach wealth from their dragonborn through taxes and services. And most dragonborn look up to their dragon leaders as almost divine beings who granted them life and who should be cared for as well.
In chromatic culture dragonborn are seen as servents, and as tools for the dragons above them. They are not equals, and most chromatic dragons do not care for their dragonborn beyond their usefulness. Wealth accumulated by dragonborn is forfeited to the leading dragon(s) of their settlement and there's a general bitterness to chromatic dragonborn about their leaders, though they still look up to them as the divine beings who granted them life, and who could take it away.   Dragonborn are shepards to kobolds who are technically their children, though many do not see them this way. Though some choose to have Kobold children, others do not as they are forced to bathrayoth. Those individuals inevitably dislike kobolds and will usually not take very good care of the kobolds made through their teeth. It is seen as the ultimate dishonour for a dragonborn to be bathrayothed, to be unwillingly stripped of all their teeth that are then turned into kobolds.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Vakatowsis, a 3 day long celebration of the birth of the twin dragons Tiamat and Bahamut which takes place each decade.
hatching of the first dragonborn is a holiday
The grand harvest is a time to harvest vast amounts of food
The golden day (summer solstice) is exalted as it makes their wealth and gold shine greatly.

Common Taboos

There are few major cultural taboos among the dragonborn.
It is a major taboo for one to waste good liversoon. Dragonborn have a lot of muscle and require a lot of calories and food, to waste good food and sustenence is seen as a terrible thing to do.
Another major taboo is to openly share wealth without reason. Though it is common to gift objects of value to lovers, it is generally frowned upon and seen as incredibly strange for one to gift any of their wealth to others as charity.

History

After the inception of humanoid races began and spread like wildfire through the one world, dragons began to see the use of smaller creatures than them as companions, and as servants. Dragons made contact with humanoids quickly and they either became companions or they became servants and slaves depending on the dragons in question, but after a few centuries and the fracturing of the one-world, dragons grew bored of the humanoids at their disposal and wanted people who were more like them. One day a blue dragon named Viedu, The Gifted buried their tooth in the ground in a place frought with elemental storms then they gave some of their own primal power to the tooth by breathing lightning upon it. From there, Viedu slumbered over the burial spot for 29 months before they saw a disturbance in the soil, emerging from it a scaled humanoid baby with wings, a tail, and horns. This child would be Ury, The First Dragonborn.
After the creation of Ury, The First Dragonborn, Viedu spread the knowledge of how to create dragonborn to their closest friends who created some dragonborn of their own, the knowledge then slowly spread from there and within a few centuries it was common knowledge among dragons how they could give birth to dragonborn children.   Over the years since their inception, dragonborn quickly became the defacto underlings to dragons. No dragon-run settlement complete without companion dragonborn. But somewhere along the way it was discovered that dragonborn could perform a similar process to the creation of dragonborn, to create kobolds. Kobolds being a smaller draconic race, the more oppressive dragons would see them as a more desireable servant, and when a dragonborn outlived their usefulness a dragon would bathrayoth them. Bathrayothing being the process where all of a dragonborn's teeth are extracted to be turned into kobolds, a usually painful process which would debilitate the dragonborn for the remainder of their life. Kobold population boomed and dragonborn would become bitter towards them, even if they were their own children because of the effect it has on them and on their friends. Dragonborn are often orgulous, like dragons before them, and to be disabled in this way can often leave these dragonhearted individuals, disheartened.   Due to their unique elemental breath weapons, dragonborn quickly took to metalsmithing and different forms of metal creation depending on the elements they are attuned to. Dragonborn were not the first to take to metalsmithing on disc, but they were the first on their plane to figure out how to imbue elemental magics into weapons. This magical tinkering serves them well in their war against the Kitsune.

Historical Figures

Viedu, The Gifted and Ury, The First Dragonborn could be considered the progenitors of the species as Viedu created Ury, and Ury was the first. Not all dragonborn are directly related to either of them however due to the unique nature of their reproduction, but they were still the first and are still remembered.

Common Myths and Legends

A myriad ago, the first dragons, twins Bahamut and Tiamat hatched into the world along with the other titans. Millenia ago, they disappeared. It is prophesised that one day they will return and herald a new age for all dragonkin, but this remains to be seen.   Millenia ago Ury, The First Dragonborn hatched. The progenitor of dragonborn kind, the first of their kind. It's said since her dragonborn and dragons themselves have weakened, their strengths dulled. But her, she was powerful, strong and wise. Some say she was more powerful than some true dragons are today. But she still died, as everyone does. Somewhere out there is the lair which became her tomb, and it is said whomever finds it may take her power for their own.   Through years of religious practice, and wondering where one goes after death, dragonborn have surmised that their afterlife is an endless expanse of gold. Most dragonborn believe that if they gather enough gold in this life, they can buy their ticket to the golden shores once they reach the afterlife and this will bring them to a place where them and ancestors from that past may live in harmony with all the gold and wealth they could ever dream of.   Though dragonborn are separate from dragons, they still have the blood of dragons, and so is believed, the souls of dragons. It is believed among dragonborn that though their bodies are humanoid and dragonborn, their souls are still that of true dragons and that there may be a process in which they can become one, possibly by buying that ticket to the golden shores of the afterlife.
