Archaic Languages

These languages cannot be deciphered through Comprehend Languages.

Primal

  • The common language of the Primal Age is oft referred to as "primal". It is a language of which only few scholars can interpret, and nearly none can speak freely. Knowledge to its use and application is slowly being realized through interaction with Leore.
  • This language is fully understood when heard with Comprehend Languages, but its ability to understand writing is more limited.
  • This language is fully understood with Tongues.

Eldar

  • The common language of the Age of Chaos, which is spoken by both Giants and Dragons is referred to as "eldar". It is a language lost to time and history, and is one that the noble races are not able to freely verbalize due to its magical weave. Eldar does not have a formal writing guideline. Its words are fluid by nature of the magics that affect its environment, and is thus indecipherable through conventional means.
  • This language cannot be understood with Comprehend Languages
  • This language can only be understood with Tongues upon passing a Charisma Saving Throw against the speaker's spell save DC. Failing causes the listener to take psychic damage and affliction of ether-rot.
  • Primal Races are immune to this effect.

Language learning system

All languages can be spoken and read. Each aspect of language requires training or a strong background to facilitate such learning.   All civilized creatures know how to speak Common. Common is spoken worldwide and can be understood by 90% of the population. The remaining 10% include outliers such as recluse communities that develop special languages of their own.   Archaic languages such as primal and eldar cannot be formally learned.

Language Point System

It takes 2 points of progress to learn how to speak a regional language, and 2 more to learn to read and write it. It takes 4 points of progress to learn how to speak a non-regional language, and 2 more to learn to read and write it.

Origin Language

Upon creating a character, you must choose one region that your character hails from. Once chosen, your character can automatically speak and read that language. If this is a "Regional Language," the character also knows how to read and speak Common If this is an "Extraplanar Language," the character knows how to speak Common, but not read it. If this is an "Other Language," the character knows how to speak Common, but not read it.

Background Languages

In addition to knowing the languages above, there are some background choices which allow the character to learn more languages. If the background you chose offers proficiency in an intelligence-based ability check, you gain 2 points of progress to learn how to speak a regional or non-regional language. Languages provided from the original background description will be ignored (ex. Sage offering two languages learned will be ignored.)   Languages provided from race are ignored.

Learning Order

In order to learn a language, the character must learn how to speak it before learning how to read it. This in mind, it is possible for a character to know how to speak many languages but read less of them.   Non-regional languages take more investment to learn, and may come with some prerequisites to learn.
  • Deep Speech requires one to know how to speak Undercommon before learning it.

Racial Languages

Languages learned by race (Human learning any 1 language, High Elf learning any 1 language) are disabled in favor of tethering languages known to a character's background.
