Akiko Fukuhara
Akiko Fukuhara (a.k.a. Sapphire)
Akiko was unwinding at home after a long day at work. Her company had provided her with a spacious apartment, a perk a cut above the standard for most in the tech industry. Tonight's dinner was a simple beef and egg ramen pack – not exactly gourmet, but it would do. As she settled onto her couch in her underwear, she flicked on a horror-romance flick, ready to indulge in some guilty pleasure.
Suddenly, the doorbell interrupted her relaxation. "Damn," she muttered, eyeing her kimono draped nearby. The bell rang again, prompting her to hastily throw it on for modesty's sake before answering. She swung the door open to find a man in a disheveled suit standing before her. Who was this guy, and how had he managed to bypass security?
"Miss Akiko Fukuhara?" he inquired, his tone betraying a hint of boredom.
"Yes, that's me. Who are you?" Akiko responded, her curiosity piqued.
"I'm from the city legal office," he explained, presenting his ID. "Hate to ask, but could you show me your ID?"
Nodding, Akiko retrieved her ID from her agent and displayed it. "What's this about? I'm with Kiroshi; the city doesn't have anything to do with me."
"I'm here to give you this datashard and have you sign for the cash benefit," he clarified, displaying both items. He extended his agent with a thumbprint prompt.
Complying, Akiko pressed her thumb down on the device and watched as the authorization notice appeared. He then handed her the shards. "Have a nice evening," he said before walking away.
Sliding the data shard into her jack, Akiko suddenly collapsed to the floor, overcome with grief. Rynelle was gone – killed on the streets. The weight of regret settled heavily upon her. She had the resources; she could have done more. Anguish gave way to fury, and she pounded the floor with her fist, each blow driven by her sorrow and frustration.
As dawn broke, Akiko made the difficult call to her workplace, citing a loss in the family. With a heavy heart, she began to strategize. She reached out to some friends from the party scene, hoping for any information about Rynelle. But as her anger surged, she realized that these acquaintances knew nothing of the streets. It was then that she dialed Partiguru Hana.
"Hana, I need your help. Help that only you can provide," she implored.
Hana's melodious voice came through the line. "Whatcha need, choom?"
"Rynelle..." Akiko's voice cracked as tears flowed freely. "Rynelle's..."
Without hesitation, Hana simply replied, "On my way, choom," before hanging up.
Twenty minutes later, the door buzzer sounded. Akiko didn't bother covering up as she opened the door, and Hana enveloped her in a comforting embrace. They entered the apartment, and Akiko handed Hana the datashard.
"Oh honey, I knew how much you loved that girl. I heard rumors she was on the streets," Hana sympathized.
"Yeah, she walked away from Meatwagon, and they pretty much cut her off from corplife. She started running with some mercs, one of them called Sarge. I need to find him. I need to confront him, demand to know why he didn't save her. I need..." Akiko's voice trailed off, consumed by a mixture of rage and powerlessness.
"Wait a sec, choom. Word on the street is that Sarge is a solo. He'd take you out before you even drew your sword. If you promise not to go all kamikaze on Sarge, I can track down his contact info. But listen, you've got a cushy job at Kiroshi, and you don't know what it's like out there. I'll find a way to reach this guy, but promise me you won't do anything reckless," Hana cautioned.
Suppressing her fury, Akiko nodded. "I promise. Thank you."
"That's what chooms are for. I'll see what I can do and keep you posted," Hana assured her before giving her another hug and departing.
Akiko decided to take a quick shower, hoping to collect herself before facing whatever unexpected situation awaited her. As the water cascaded over her, she couldn't shake off the sense of unease. Then, she heard the buzzer once more. "What now?" she muttered, hastily wrapping herself in a towel and glancing at her computer. To her surprise, it was Kimura, accompanied by a couple of Lazarus associates. Why would he be here?
Rapidly throwing on a t-shirt and shorts, she opened the door, bowing respectfully. "Kimura-sama, it's been some time. Please, come in," she gestured, stepping aside to allow him entry. The Lazarus men remained outside.
"Fukuhara-san, it's good to see you're well. Although, it seems you might be considering something unwise," Kimura observed as he settled into a chair. "Why don't you finish getting ready, and then we can talk."
Hurriedly, Akiko dried off, opting for something more substantial to wear. Once prepared, she joined Kimura, taking a seat across from him. "How may I serve Intel?" she inquired, ready to address whatever matter had brought him to her doorstep.
Well, firstly, I will say I am sorry for your loss, we knew how important Ms. Davenport was to you. If you like, I will try and get her body as soon as its available."
"I appreciate your condolences, sir," Akiko responded, touched by Kimura's gesture of sympathy. "Having her remains in our family vault would mean a great deal to me."
Kimura nodded in acknowledgment. "As for why I'm here, let's just say I'm not one to hold grudges. I did mention that I would overlook your past failure, with the understanding that you might owe me a favor in the future."
Akiko's heart sank as she realized the implications of his words. "Yes, sir?"
A menacing chuckle escaped Kimura's lips. "You're going to perform a task for the company. While you're engaged in this task, I'll ensure your absence from work goes unnoticed. You'll still need to make occasional appearances, but they'll understand if you're not always there."
Akiko's mind raced as she struggled to comprehend Kimura's instructions. "Sir, I don't understand. What could I possibly do that you couldn't hire a professional for?"
Kimura's expression remained impassive. "When your friend, Ms. Hana Odeshi, finds the information about her friends, you will approach him. Convince him to let you join his group, perhaps even appealing to his desire for revenge. You will await further instructions from me. Periodically, I will assign missions to you. Persuade them to assist you; both you and they will be compensated, of course."
"Kimura-sama, I'm not an edgerunner..."
"You are now. Remember, you belong to me. You will carry out this task. Or I will ensure your failure, and the reasons behind it, are exposed to your father. I will also have the company remove you, along with the cyberware we've implanted in you. And then, as a final act, I will disclose your actions to Alicia Cho's associates, signaling that Kiroshi will no longer offer you protection. Do I make myself clear?"
Akiko stood and bowed, her fists clenched tightly at her sides. "Yes, Kimura-sama. I understand. I will do as you ask." The boiling rage threatened to consume her. She had already planned to investigate what happened to Rynelle, but this? Becoming a mercenary was not part of her identity. She was a Fukuhara; her father held significant influence. He must have noticed her tension.
"Temper, temper, Akiko," Kimura remarked coolly. "You should not have failed me, nor should you have attempted to seduce Ms. Cho. This situation is of your own making. If you seek someone to blame, look in the mirror. Rest assured, I know how to contact you. Otherwise, I will arrange for a fixer to relay my instructions. Have a pleasant day, Ms. Fukuhara." With that, he rose and made his way to the door. Before leaving, he turned back to her. "Oh, and Akiko, not a word to anyone. Your new associates, your family, even your agent. You belong to me. Do not disappoint." And with that final warning, he departed.
With a roar of fury, Akiko unleashed her anger, wreaking havoc on her apartment before collapsing onto her bed, utterly spent, tears streaming down her cheeks. Over the next few days, she oscillated between rage, despair, and guilt, the toll evident in the shattered remnants of her once-orderly home.
Upon returning to work, Akiko noticed the palpable shift in her colleagues' behavior. Avoiding her gaze, they seemed unwilling to engage in conversation. "They don't want to share in my grief," she realized bitterly. The news of her predicament had spread quickly. Akemi, her supervisor, called her in unexpectedly, surprising her with a comforting embrace. "You have my condolences," Akemi murmured. "I've been informed of your situation. If you need time, take it. Your tasks can be reassigned. Though I never met her, I remember what Toshiko meant to you. Feel what you need to feel. And if you need to go home, go."
"Thank you, Akemi. For now, I need to be here," Akiko replied, her voice heavy with emotion.
That night, Hana reached out to her. "I can arrange a meeting, if you're still interested," she offered.
Hope surged within Akiko. "Yes, Hana, please. Let me know when and where. I'll be there."

Personal history
Akiko Fukuhara was born in the bustling city of Osaka, Japan, to proud parents Hanako and Daiki Fukuhara, on March 12, 2020. Hanako, a skilled Cybertechnician employed at Kiroshi Optical, was renowned as one of the company's top talents. Meanwhile, Daiki, her father, carved his own path as a rising star in the marketing division, although his ambitions sometimes clashed with the rapid advancement of his wife's career. This professional rivalry often kept Daiki occupied with long hours at the office, leaving Hanako to shoulder much of the responsibility for raising and nurturing Akiko.
At age 4, Akiko's parents enrolled her in various extracurricular classes, including judo, art, and calligraphy. While she excelled in the artistic realms of art and calligraphy, finding passion in strokes of the brush and intricacies of Japanese characters, she struggled to engage with her judo classes, often finding them repetitive and dull.
By age 8, Akiko's parents received well-deserved promotions. Hanako ascended to Lead Cybernetic Optics Engineer, a minor executive role within Kiroshi Optical, showcasing her exceptional skills and dedication to advancing optical cybernetic technology.
Meanwhile, Akiko's father, Daiki, was promoted to the position of Senior Marketing Specialist. In this role, he worked directly under the Japan District Manager of Marketing, positioning him to potentially ascend to an executive position in the future. Despite this promising career trajectory, Daiki's sense of achievement was overshadowed by his growing frustration that he should be, at the very least, on equal footing with his wife in terms of rank and recognition within the company. This lingering sense of inequality fueled his ambition and drove him to strive for even greater success in his career.
At age 9, on December 15, 2029, Akiko suffered the first of a few times her father abused her. Her judo sensei told her father that she was performing extremely badly in class, like she didn't want to be there. Daiki's extreme anger erupted. He backhanded Akiko, knocking her to the floor and berated her for her failure. In his fury, he suggested that her lack of progress was hindering his own career advancement and bringing dishonor to the family.
Hanako remained passive, observing silently nearby as the altercation unfolded. After the confrontation, Akiko retreated to her room, overwhelmed with emotion, where Hanako eventually joined her. While offering comfort, Hanako gently emphasized the importance of improvement. This incident marked the beginning of Akiko's gradual estrangement from her father, a pattern that persisted from childhood through adolescence into adulthood.
On her 10th birthday, Akiko attained the status of senior white belt in judo. Amidst the celebration, her father introduced Akuma Hayashi, his mistress, to the gathering. Akuma, possesed significant connections in Japan's noble and corporate circles, bringing subtle power to the family. However, Akiko disliked her, as she thought Akuma was replacing her mother.
Unbeknownst to Akiko, her parents and Akuma had reached a tacit agreement. Hanako, recognizing her place in Daiki's affections, chose to embrace Akuma as family, accepting Daiki's bond with Akuma. Hanako was aware that she wasn't Daiki's preferred partner but also cognizant of the potential fallout a divorce could inflict on their careers.
Recognizing Akiko's promise, Akuma orchestrated for the esteemed Judo and Kenjutsu Master, Masaru Suzuki, along with his wife, to take charge of her training. Within a few months, they relocated to the family's residence, assuming the role of Akiko's instructors.
Over the ensuing years, under Sensei Masaru's teachings, Akiko thrived in both judo and kenjutsu, rapidly progressing in proficiency and technique. Simultaneously, Sensei Chiaki fostered Akiko's artistic inclinations, honing her creative expression in painting and calligraphy. Alongside her artistic teaching, Chiaki also instructed Akiko in stealth techniques, saijutsu, and shurikenjutsu, expanding Akiko's martial arts. Their complementary teaching styles enabled Akiko to concentrate fully and realize her utmost potential.
On August 8, 2034, at the age of 14, Akiko's family received news of their transfer to the Night City Kiroshi affiliate. Accompanied by the Suzukis, they embarked on a sea voyage aboard the Pacific Voyager, a converted US Marine assault carrier transformed into a formidable mobile fortress.
During the month-long journey, Akiko immersed herself in various activities, honing her skills while also bonding with the nomad children on board. She eagerly participated in fishing, assisted with hydroponics, and embraced the nomadic lifestyle, finding a close friend in Leilani Akana, a girl her age. Their nightly conversations under the stars, where Leilani shared her knowledge of constellations, forged a deep bond between them. They exchanged contact information, allowing them to stay in touch whenever Leilani's flotilla neared Night City.
On September 20, the family arrived at Night City and disembarked and was greeted by Kiroshi security personnel, who escorted them directly to the Kiroshi Compound. During the flight, Masaru took the opportunity to impart a sobering lesson to Akiko, pointing out the bombed-out City Center of Night City. He explained the consequences of ego-driven decisions made by powerful individuals and provided a brief history lesson on the events of the 4th Corporate War that had ravaged Night City.
On December 8, 2034, Akiko attends her first school dance, where she enjoys herself and shares a dance with Toshiko Watanabe. Their connection deepens when Toshiko unexpectedly kisses Akiko goodnight before hurrying home. This relationship would blossom into Akiko's first real love, and lasted a 2 years.
On January 15, 2035, While rushing down the hallway after school, Akiko collides with Akemi Sato, accompanied by her friends. Akemi yelled at her for her clumsiness, and went to slap Akiko, but Akiko swiftly caught her arm, halting the attack. Suddenly scared, Akemi quickly, threatening to retaliate. This started a vicious rivalry that would persist throughout high school as Akemi relentlessly endeavors to undermine Akiko and would continue into their adulthood.
Two years later, on February 14, 2036 (16) Toshiko and Akiko have fully fallen in love with each other. However, Akemi had been planning her attack. Using money and corporate influence, she forced Toshiko to publicly break up with Akiko, and declaring she loves Akemi. Akemi then reminded Akiko that any retribution could affect Akiko's father as Akemi's father was senior to him. Akiko was terrified of harming her father's position. She looked at Toshiko once more, clearly hurt, walked away, followed by Akemi's laughter at her powerlessness.
On March 02, Akemi struck again, using information she got from Toshiko, she publicly revealed that Akiko's father had a mistress from outside the corporation. This actually prompt Kiroshi security to investigate but backed off due to Akuma's ties to an influential noble family and her corporate connections. Fuming with anger, Akiko returned home to confront her family for answers.
When she got home, she saw her mother and Akuma drinking tea and talking like old friends. She angrily demanded answers, shocking both women. Hanako at first stated it was none of Akiko's business, but Akuma calmly stated that the relationship was openly known and posed no danger to her family or Kiroshi. Akiko did not listen, and called Akuma a whore, and said her mother was weak for allowing this. She then went to Chiaki to get her mind off of it. Chiaki had heard her outburst, and instead of comforting her, she berated her for her disrespect to her mother and Akumi, stating that this level of disrespect was not acceptable from one of her students, and closed the door to their rooms.
Realizing her mistake, Akiko tearfully sought forgiveness from her mother and Akumi. Hanako and Akumi accepted her apology, but reminded her that she was their child, and her words were dishonorable. Akumi then asked about her source of information, and angrily stated she would handle it, leaving to speak to her contacts in Kiroshi. Hanako told Akiko to go her room to reflect and meditate, she could rejoin the family in the morning. For the rest of high school, Akemi would keep her attacks to jibes and insults, after her father was threatened by Akuma and the Senior Manager of Night City Operations.
In September 2036, tragedy struck the Fukuhara household when Akiko was abruptly pulled out of class by two Kiroshi security personnel. She was taken to a secure room where she found Akuma, Masaru, and Chiaki, guarded both inside and out. Masaru broke the news to Akiko that her mother had been kidnapped, and the family was relocated to these quarters until the company could ascertain what happened.
Facing the grim reality, Akiko noticed Akuma was holding a Kendachi Monosword, this surprised her, as she had no idea Akuma was trained, Masaru told her that Akuma was one of his best students, much like Akiko. Akuma assured her that every effort would be made to locate her mother. When Akiko inquired about her father's whereabouts, she learned that he refused to leave his office. Sadly, Akiko's mother was never found, presumed either abducted or killed and disposed of. However, Akiko's father received a promotion for his unwavering loyalty to the company, this just widened the rift between him and Akiko. However, it did engender a level of respect between Akuma and Akiko.
A month later, Akuma moved into the household, promising support to Akiko, who had emotionally distanced herself from her father.
On her 18th birthday, Akiko received her acceptance to Night City University. The Suzukis and Akuma stood by her side, with Akuma setting up a generous fund to cover Akiko's expenses throughout her education. However, her father's fleeting birthday call, followed by a cold inquiry about her moving out, further strained their already fractured relationship. From then on, Akiko seldom communicated with her father. Though she still acknowledges him as her father, and respects him as such, she harbors a mix of fear and disgust towards him.
This event would solidify the bond between Akiko and Akuma. While Akiko still refuses to consider Akuma family, they are respectful and friendly with each other. Akuma decided to also start using her connections more, in order to make Akiko's life a little easier.
Akuma also used her connections to get a sizable conapt and studio for the Suzuki family. The studio allows them to take students if they wish, and acts as a refuge that Akiko goes to get away from everything. Akiko considers the Suzukis her only true family.
On June 10, 2037, Masaru accompanies Akiko to a prominent dojo in Night City, renowned for its expertise in Japanese and Korean martial arts. Akiko demonstrates her proficiency and is formally awarded 2nd Dan status in both Judo and Kenjutsu. Returning home, they celebrate the achievement, with Masaru presenting her with a matching Kendachi-made Daisho: Katana and Wakizashi, as a congratulatory gift. Additionally, he grants her access to his studio for practice and workspace for weapon maintenance and smithing. Masaru and Chiaki both tell Akiko that she is no longer a student but is capable to of self-teaching herself towards mastery, but they are always here for advice.
In September, she began her studies at Night City University and moved into a shared apartment with Sarah Tanaka and Rynelle Davenport. The three quickly bonded, and Sarah and Akiko started dating.
Sarah took Akiko to exclusive parties, introducing her to Partiguru Hana, a Piranha fixer, who provided her with a designer drug enhancing her emotional and physical sensations. Akiko discovered she enjoyed the drug's effects during intimate moments with Sarah. Under Sarah's guidance, Akiko explored various experiences and learned to assert herself and pursue her desires.
After a year together, Sarah disappeared suddenly, leaving no trace. Despite efforts to locate her, including Hana's assistance, Sarah remained missing. During this time, Akiko grew closer to Rynelle, standing by her when Rynelle's parents vanished amidst corporate intrigue.
Over the years at university, Akiko developed strong feelings for Rynelle, endeavoring to deepen their connection. They joined the same sorority, got matching tattoos, and even underwent cyber installations together. Rynelle was emotionally blunted, but little by little, they became as close as sisters.
In mid-2042, they both received their work placement letters. Akiko's assignment to Kiroshi Assembly came as no surprise; she had anticipated this position as a certainty. However, Rynelle's placement at REO Meatwagon was unexpected. Akiko had assumed Rynelle would join Trauma Team or perhaps a cyberware corporation. Concerned for Rynelle's well-being, Akiko tried her best to persuade her to apply for Trauma Team instead, knowing Meatwagon's reputation and fearing Rynelle wouldn't thrive there.
In 2044, Rynelle graduated as the valedictorian, while Akiko found herself towards the bottom of her class. With graduation came the realization for Akiko that her financial support would soon vanish. While Akuma had been patient thus far, Akiko now faced the expectation to support herself financially. Sensing the impending changes, Akiko and Rynelle decided to indulge in one final night of hedonistic revelry, actually waking up together the next morning. Despite feeling irked by Rynelle's pragmatic departure, the night intensified Akiko's desire and love for her.
However, fate took a cruel turn when Akiko commenced her job and discovered her direct supervisor to be none other than her teenage adversary, Akemi Sato. Despite Akemi's attempts to make her first year difficult with an overwhelming workload, Akiko's past training enabled her to surmount any challenge thrown her way.
In early 2045, one of Akiko's coworkers, Masai Takashi, had a reputation for sexual harassment, decided to target Akiko. At first, she thought it an annoyance, and ignored him. This just made him try harder. Eventually, he was able to corner her in a secluded supply room, but when he moved in to force her to accept him, Akiko used her judo to throw him out of the supply room. As he got up, not realizing there were now witnesses, he moved to attack her again, this time in anger. She flipped him on to his back, followed him down and grabbed his groin, and twisted, followed by a threat to leave her and the other women alone, or next time, she emasculates him for real. When she let him up, he vowed revenge, and walked away, supported by a few supporters.
Throughout 2045, Akiko and Rynelle frequently met, with their encounters increasingly resembling dates. On their last outing, Akiko confessed her love for Rynelle, who responded with a knowing smile, fueling Akiko's hopes for reciprocation.
In late 2045, Akiko received a distressing call from Rynelle, who had been implicated in a corporate theft, a deed Akiko was certain she wouldn't commit. Despite her apprehension, Akiko offered advice, but Rynelle appeared confident in handling the situation. However, upon learning of Rynelle's demise, Akiko's fragile mental state deteriorated rapidly. Feelings of self-recrimination, guilt, rage, and grief overwhelmed her, she was already struggling with her own cyber-related mental issues and a need for therapy. Akiko's descent into darkness was swift and involuntary. Blinded by her emotions, she vowed merciless retribution against whoever was responsible for Rynelle's demise.
She went and got some changes to her tattoos, bought a new outfit that fit her new personality, collected her weapons, and headed to the meeting that Hana set up with this "Sarge."
The story of her descent into minor cyberpsychosis and her fateful decision, and the price are in the first prose of this article.

Failures & Embarrassments
While doing a favor for Riko Kimura, an intelligence officer for Kiroshi, she was to bring a up and coming celebrity to Kiroshi. She was told to go to a party and convince her. She took some of a designer drug Partiguru Hana of the Piranhas had made for her, and lost control of her sexual urges, and tried to seduce the target, Alicia Cho, who was there with her boyfriend. Cho's people threatened her, but Kiroshi made it go away. Kimura, however, knew she may be of use to him. A young, easily controllable tech with her connections and capabilities could an asset.
Mental Trauma
Akiko is suffering from the first stages of cyberpsychosis. Her emotions have been fluctuating highly, and she has become far more impulsive than usual, and that could be potentially dangerous as she is already quite impulsive.
Akiko also has borderline hypersexuality due to her partying in college and use of designer drugs that caused her to have more sensitivity to physical contact and lack of inhibitions.
Akiko also has intense, undiagnosed ADHD, and also carries a lot of guilt for Rynelle's death. She feels she could have done more, and failed someone she loved more than anyone alive.
Intellectual Characteristics
Intense curiousity, until she gets bored. She did not do well in school unless she was drinking coffee. She has a very easy time with technology and understanding tech designs. She loves to tinker, and can be very fidgety when she is not working on technology.
She also meditates, and is very creative with painting, something that helps her focus more.
Morality & Philosophy
Akiko is honorable, and if she says something, she will usually do as she has said. She does not want to kill people, but she will if her anger spikes. She has killed, and didn't take well to it, but understands that sometimes you have to kill.
She has no modesty, and has no problem engaging in sexual acts or being nude in public. She is somewhat a wildchild when partying.
She is also extremely loyal to people she cares about. While she is loyal to her family and corporation, her level of loyalty is very different to a person she loves.
Taboos
Embarassing her family, or bringing dishonor to them.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Revenge. She wants to find who killed Rynelle, and why, and make them pay. Part of it is her own guilt over her perceived role in her death, part of it seems to be pure rage over the loss of someone she loved.
Prove herself. She is terrified to be on the street, but her pride won't let her show that. So she wants to prove herself to her new team, herself, and Kimura.

She is extremely vain and somewhat compulsive about cleanliness. Showers are also a time to relax and think.
