History

The Gith were said to be a group of beings that once belonged to the material plane, but this kingdom vanished overnight. While no one on the material plane knows what happened, and very few gith have the full history, they were taken by the being known as The Corruption. This being was responsible for the creation of the first mindflayers using the bodies of these beings. For generations, the Gith were made slaves, and experimented on until eventually they became the beings they are today. Eventually, there rose a being within their ranks that began to gain a following within their society. This being preached of a world in which no one was subjugated to the whims of a master, and where everyone did their part to ensure a better existence for those around them. This being was Gith, and it was her teachings that sparked a revolution against the Illithids and the Corruption.   This revolution was a losing war from the beginning, with the overwhelming force of the Illithids being too much for the less competent leadership of a newly founded revolution. What changed the tide, however, was the decision by Gith to make an alliance with the Sapphire Dragons of the Astral Branches. These Dragons helped turn the tide, allowing the Gith to then push back and eventually defeat the Corruption. They were eventually able to overthrow their adversary and banish them into the Material Plane using a newly formed rift that resulted from The Tearing. During this final battle, however, Gith was said to have vanished. Her fate is currently unknown.   Eventually, when the war ceased, disagreements began to form between two distinct factions among those who survived concerning the teachings of Gith. One faction believed in a very literal interpretation, predicated on each person needing to serve a specific role or being required to play a very specific part within a given society in order for it to flourish. The other believed her teachings to be metaphorical/ spiritual, with more of a focus on the internal journey rather than the material circumstances of their reality. These groups formed into the Githyanki and Githzerai respectively, with a third much smaller group known as the Githxanum, beings unwilling to convert to either side, deciding to live on their own.
