The Cryo Belt

Geography

The Cryo Belt is the region south of the temperate belt that is permanently below freezing temperature throughout the year. While some areas of Morzanna, particularly in the Temperate Belt, experience brief warm periods above freezing during the warmest weeks of summer, the Cryo Belt remains frozen for every week out of almost every year.   The Cryo Belt comprises a wide region that includes many different geographic features, including mountains, frozen lakes, flat lands, and ocean. Except in the warmest of years, the terrain and the structures that once belonged to a people forgotten by time lie dormant beneath the glacial region.

History

The Cryo Belt is believed to have once been a warmer series of regions, including various geographical features that have since been unified by unfeeling ice. The remnants of an advanced people from the world that is believed to have existed before The Great Chilling are buried in the Cryo Belt, including Havens and many other structures that have since proved invaluable to the modern peoples of Morzanna.   While the Temperate Belt becomes impassible during the deepest periods of Winter due to low temperatures and snowfall, the Cryo Belt is inhospitable at the best of times and inaccessible the rest. Even when the cold becomes survivable during the warmest periods of the year, it never becomes warm enough for the ice to melt. Those few who might consider an expedition into the Cryo Belt, such as Outriders, must be provisioned with specialized and cumbersome gear and supplies to have a hope of surviving the journey.   For those brave and well equipped enough to venture into The Cryo Belt, the region has proven to be fruitful when the arcane and technological old world treasures trapped beneath the ice can be accessed, as few, if any, other scavengers can reach them. There are even rumors that elements of the old world live on beneath the frost, in whatever ancient and eldritch manner the rumor mills see fit to describe.
