Moonstone
A smooth milky white translucent stone. It can be an alternative source of magic like a mage gem. However its magic output is directly related to the moon as It has a strong connection to lunar and celestial magic. They are more powerful than a mage gem on a full moon, but useless on a new moon. Essentially it trades the reliability of a mage gem for alternative power. This does make moonstone favorable for cyclical or temporary magic manipulations. They are even more effective with lunar and celestial magic manipulations.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Moonstone appears milky white translucent stone. However the color can be slightly effected if the moonstone is fed addition types of magic. The translusency reflects the power of the stone the more opaque the stone the more powerful the stone. Natural Moonstone forms as smooth, rounded ellipsoid and has a texture in between a pearl or glass. THesize varies depending on the starting material
Physical & Chemical Properties
Like a mage gem Moonstone can be used to store magic that can be used for magic manipulations. However it uses the moon and celestial bodies as its main source to acquire magic. Thus like the cycles of the moon, moonstone utility varies. They are more powerful than a mage gem on a full moon, but powerless on a new moon. It can still absorb other types of magic, but they must be actively fed into the stone.
The stone naturally absorbs lunar magic so it can be used for protections or resistance against foreign lunar and celestial magic manipulation. However when used as a source it can work thrice as effective for lunar and celestial magic manipulations. It can also serve a lunar or celestial magic link for more complex magic manipulations.
Compounds
Most devices using moonstone simply embed the moonstones onto the item. There are not many alloys that use moonstone as it tends to crack and shatter at high enough temperatures. Thus most compounds used are crushed versions of moonstone Called Moonsand. Due to its smaller size Moonsand is not as effective at absorbing or storing magic. However it is still very effective in incorporating a connection to lunar magic into a concoction.. Moonsand is also sought after for artistic purposes. When used in the starting material for glass it gives glass the translucent milky property. This Moonglass is famed for glowing under moonlight.
Geology & Geography
SInce moonstone naturally forms in pools of calm water, it most commonly found near the shores large bodies of water. It can be found in the tide pools and puddles the forms with changing of the shoreline. However it does also require that the water be calm for prolong periods of time. Lake Bluestone and Lake Moonmiro are famed for producing High Quality Moonstone. Other good places to look of moonstone are the East Islands. the Coral Island, Ilias Lake and Paradise Lake Certain regions of the shore of the Sandsialo Bay and Summedia Northern Coast are great place to find naturally occuring moonstone
Origin & Source
Naturally occurring Moonstone forms into what became known as moonpools. These are shallow pools of calm water, usually found on the shores of large bodies of water. Some even form from Tidepools on beaches. Calmness of the water reflects moonlight and starlight more effectively allowing for lunar magic to flow more freely into the surrounding materials. Loose stones in moonpools then slowly get transformed by this flow of lunar and celestial magic. Over time the stones first smoothen and then gain transparency. Once they gain transparency they can be officially be classified as moonstone. However naturally this process takes around 5-10 years depending on the stone size. THen is takes additional time to gain its translucency over time. A Decently effective naturally occuring moonstone takes at least 50-70 years to form.
Moonstone can also be created by the Moon Goddess. She essentially bless a stone she chooses. Moonstone formed this way are almost opaque, extremely powerful, Moonstone also formed in pools that the moon goddess steps in.
Life & Expiration
Moonstone Capacity to absorb magic does not deteriorate unless its magic connection is severed, it is exposed to antimagic, or destroyed with chaos magic. Its reserved of magic can be be used by magic manipulations or inhibited by the phase of the moon.
History & Usage
History
Moonstone has been an alternative to a mage gem when it comes to storing magic to use as a magic source. However moonstone effectiveness fluates with the phases of the moon. This does make moonstone favorable for cyclical or temporary magic manipulations. It also is valued for its association with the goddess and her blessing.
Famous Moonstones
- Meritus Moonstone: The original Moonstone used by Emerus Meritus in the Mooncurse ritual used to create the Luposarirace. It is fist sized and very opaque and inscribed with enhancing runes
- Uberon Vixen: A sculpture of a multi-tailed fox placed at the entrance of the towerton Throne Hall. It is made from a combination of red and yellow moonglass. It glows when touched by moonlight coming in from skylights
- Towerton Throne Hall: looks like a cathedral , famous for its many Moonglass windows that glow under moonlight. The windows depict the various celestial bodies and stars. A large circular window in place behind the throne and has the Uberon crest at its center.
Discovery
Moonstone was naturally occuring stone, however some techniques were created to artifically create or amplify them,
Everyday use
Moonstones are most commonly as a storage or source for magic manipulations, especially cyclical and reoccuring ones. They also are very effective for protections against lunar magic or to amplify lunar magic manipulations. Moonstone is also sought after to create Moonsand and moonglass.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Moonstone has acuired an association with fertility and purity. Thus it is commonly used for jewelry inteded for expectant or exsisting mothers, It also is sought out artisticaly use to its milky appearance. Colored moonstone is extremly highly valued as it expensive to find moonstone and requires a substial magic input in order to get a color change. Moonglass is particualar desired by the rich as a status symbol and for its beauty
The Order of the Night Sky revered moonstone as it is physical manifestation to connect with the moon goddess and the Lunar Zodia
Industrial Use
The high value for practical and artistic purposes set a high demand for moonstone, which the slow natural forming process cannot keep up with. Thus techniques for artificial moonstones rose to meet the demand. The 3 most effective techniques are ways; Simulation, Seeding and amplification
- Simulation: This technique involves recreating the conditions for moonstone to form. This is most commonly done by creating vessels filled with purified and calm waters that are exposed to moonlight regularly and provide an initial starting substrate for moonstones to form. This technique is the least labor intensive, but takes the longest. Essentially it takes the same amount of time to form as naturally occuring moonstone, except it is easier to find and control the end result. Artificial moonstones created this way looks almost identical to natural ones and thus are the most expensive artificial moonstones.
- Seeding: This technique involves fusing a substrate to an small pre existing moonstone with alchemy magic. The properties of the original moonstone are essentially extended to the substrate material, however this "dilutes" the potency of the moonstone. Thus artificial moonstone created this way is very translucent. However this technique makes it easier to create larger sized stones or to create a mass quantities of them that can them be further refined. Still this technique is the most difficult to do as it requires a skilled alchemy magic user and starting material. Moonstone created this way also tend to have slight imperfections in their shape
- Amplification: This technique involves amplifying a pre-existing Moonstone. this can be done a couple ways. Usually this is done by manually feeding magic to pre existing moonstones. It can also be done by using magic manipulations or devices that amplify the intensity of moonlight on a moonpool, increasing the speed and potency of the normal formation process. Lastly, time magic can be used to feed the moonstone, but to also speed up time to naturally form. A drawback of the amplification technique is that it requires a preexisting moonstone and it cant increase the size of a moonstone, only increase its potency or color. It is also the most labor intensive technique as it requires the most magic input to create. However this technique can create powerful stones, and is the easiest way to introduce different magics to influence the color of the moonstone
Refinement
Moonstone can be refined to increase the potency and opaqueness of the stone. THe Amplification techniques for artificial moonstones essentially are just refining moonstones. This is done by manually feeding magic to the moonstone , amplifying the intensity of moonlight on a moonpool, or time magic can but to also speed up time to naturally form.
Moonstone can also be refined to affect the color buy feeding it different types of magic. It does take a substantial amount of stone magic to change color. ALso a moonstone can lose color as the magic is used. Colors match the magic circle color of the magic feed to it. Thus by combining multiple magics certain color blends and gradients can be formed. Here are some of the most sought after colors.
- Crimson Moonstone - Created by feeding blood magic. one of the rarest colors as it is one of the hardest ones to create
- Ultramarine Moonstone - Created by feeding water magic. most commonly founded colored natural formed moonstone
- Magenta Moonstone - Created by feeding Time magic. Sought after for its unique color
- Teal Moonstone - Created by feeding crystal magic. Its has a higher luster than other moonstone
- Golden Moonstone - Created by feeding Light magic. Has a slight metallic appearance
- Opal Moonstone - Created by feeding seal or barrier magic. Has a multicolored opalescence effect. also sought after for utility in cyclic barriers and seals
- Runed Moonstone - Created by feeding scribe magic. Has a matte black markings and can store specific runes to be released
Manufacturing & Products
- Moonsand: Moonstone crusded into a rough powder. Due to its smaller size Moonsand is not as effective at absorbing or storing magic. However it is still very effective in incorporating a connection to lunar magic into a concoction.. Moonsand is also sought after for artistic purposes. Starting material for Moonglass. When used in the starting material for glass it gives glass the
- Moonglass: Glass formed by melting moonsand. Has a translucent milky property and is famed for glowing under moonlight. It keeps the colors of its original moonstone
Hazards
Moonstone is not hazardous to most humans however Luposari are vulnerable to Moonstone , a stone used during their mooncurse origins. On sight, moonstone has a slight hypnotizing effect on luposari, seeming to calm them. On contact moonstone trigger their wolf forms and to enter bloodlust. However with some magic manipulations moonstone can be used to help suppress wolf forms.
