The Downworld is the mist-filled space between the continents of Morn. Instead of an ocean, the continents are divided by a vast chasm that reaches down to unknown depths and is obscured by thick fog.
The depth of the Downworld is measured by its height in relation to Kagga, the port city in Ashun where airships were first constructed. The measurements used are FB for feet below Kagga, and FA for feet above.
The Deeps
The Deeps refers to the deeper parts of the Downworld. Below the lowest layer of fog at about 1000 FB, all ability to see is gone and the pressure of the Deeps can be felt. There is immense pressure exerted that intensifies with greater depth.
The pressure below the lowest level of the fog is enough to crush most airships. Some airships, constructed with metal hulls, have been built to survive a greater depth of the Downworld, but even these cannot survive too far down. The record for the deepest an airship has gone and survived is 3000 FB.
Nobody has ever reached the bottom of the Downworld and survived. It is thought that the River Styx is at the bottom, connecting the Lower Planes.
The Deeps can also be reached by digging too far down on land. Some races are better adapted for surviving the Deeps. Dwarves and gnomes have a high tolerance for the pressure. Deep gnomes have the highest tolerance and are able to live deep underground.
Fog
A thick layer of fog obscures all of the Downworld. The height of the fog varies with the weather. On clear days, there is a baseline height of fog that reaches about 500 FB. It is rare that there is no fog before that depth, however, as winds and storms push the fog higher up. The fog frequently drifts above the height of the continents and coastlines are often blanketed by thick fog rolls.
Water Cycle
The absence of oceans in Morn means that water flowing from rivers falls directly into the Downworld, disappearing below the mists. The nature of the deepest levels of the Downworld is not known, but the heavy mists carry water vapour up until it flows back into the clouds, allowing Morn to have a stable water cycle.
The Edges of the Continents
There are no beaches on Morn anymore. The edges of all the continents are abrupt cliffs that drop into the mists. Ordinary people avoid going too close to the edges for fear of slipping and falling into the Downworld.
