Nepta
Nepta is the name of the kingdom of water genasi on Torren Isle. Nepta is also the name by which the water genasi refer to the island. Nepta is home to several small towns and villages of water genasi and is ruled by the Sama in the town of Luminia. The Sama is a hereditary position passed to the eldest heir.
Nepta is thought to have been surrounded by a chain of islands before the Collapse.
Neptans were isolated from the rest of Nilandra by the loss of the ocean for almost one thousand years, however communication between Nepta and Renthis was possible during that time with flying mounts.
Culture
Neptan society feels a strong sense of loss regarding the ocean and their connection to it. They associate the decline of their people's elemental connection to water with the loss of the ocean. They view the primordial water titan, Seidon, as the cause of this loss. Though there is an awareness that there were four primordial titans that ravaged Morn during the Collapse, they view Seidon in particular as the cause of the ocean being lost. When he was banished back to the elemental plane of water, Neptans believe Seidon took all of Morn's oceans with him out of rage.
Neptans maintain some small inland lakes on their island. The lakes are sacred places where they can enjoy access to bodies of water for swimming, however much they may pale in comparison to the oceans.
On the rare occasions when a Neptan is born with visible elemental traits, such as blue skin or other watery features, the child is seen as blessed and trained to become a Sea Whisperer. Sea Whisperers are Neptans of religious significance and their advice is often sought by members of the community. They do not have any specific power or authority, however they hold influence over Neptan society.
History
Before the Collapse
Nepta is believed to have originally been a chain of smaller islands. Humans settled there in ancient times after travelling by boat from southern Nilandra and were influenced by the connection with the elemental plane of water, becoming water genasi.During the Collapse
The Collapse was particularly devastating to the water genasi of Nepta. The primordial titan of water, Seidon, was released into Morn from the ocean near their island. During the Collapse, the entire Neptan island chain was completely flooded, as well as the southern portion of Nilandra.Post-Collapse
After the Collapse, the chain of islands that had made up Nepta was now one larger island, with the shallower areas that used to be below the water level now revealed. The water genasi that had survived the Collapse rebuilt their communities. Before the Collapse, the water genasi of Nepta had held a special place for the ocean in their culture. With the oceans gone, they felt a deep sense of loss. This sense of loss was exacerbated over the generations as more and more water genasi were born with their elemental connection to water seemingly gone. Due to its proximity to the Nilandran mainland, when the city of Renthis was built it was possible for them to remain in contact with Nepta. Flying mounts were capable of traversing the distance and Nepta maintained a limited level of trade with Renthis. As the Carenthian Empire expanded, Nepta was able to trade more frequently with the mainland and maintained good relations with the empire.Invention of Airships
Since the invention of airships, Torren Isle has become of increasing interest to the Carenthian Empire. With air travel a possibility, its position in Nilandra's southern bay is seen as strategically useful in Renthis. Carenthian diplomats have been courting Neptans in the hope of making a formal alliance.
