Grolnak

Grolnak is a loosely-defined state in the Golona Desert in Nilandra. It is predominantly made up of Goblinoids but also has a sizeable population of Gnolls and Minotaurs. Grolnak refers to both the city of Grolnak and its surrounding regions in the desert.

Leadership

Grolnak is ruled by a single leader, referred to as the Darg, meaning "strongest" in Goblin. The Darg is decided through combat, with anybody able to challenge the Darg for their position. Combat for the Darg is to the death.

Culture

Grolnak culture appears brutal and violent to outsiders. While it can be violent, there are many other customs that are largely unknown outside of Golona. The Goblinoids of Grolnak place a high value on family and usually form large family groups. Parents usually aim to produce many children due to the harsh nature of life in Golona meaning some of their children will not reach adulthood.   Goblins are the lowest class in Grolnak due to their small size and comparatively low strength. However, Grolnak culture is meritorious, and when Goblins do manage to prove their might in battle they become well-respected. Unfortunately for most Goblins, life in Grolnak can be difficult and cruel. Goblin workers are often beaten if their work is considered sub-par.   Hobgoblins and Bugbears also have a difficult life in Grolnak. Both males and females are expected to prove their fighting prowess at a young age. If they gain a reputation for being weak, they will be considered as low as Goblins.   Those who are able to rise to high positions in Grolnak do so through strength and through physically fighting others for their place. Once they reach high positions, however, their lives are relatively good. They gain access to ample food and get first access to the spoils of combat. However, even those in high positions must remain on alert, because others vying for their positions will do so by fighting them for it.   Gnolls are often spared the brutal life of Goblinoids. Seen somewhat as outsiders, they are expected to perform menial jobs or be foot soldiers for the more powerful Hobgoblins and Bugbears. Minotaurs are also seen as outsiders, but their physical might makes them valuable fighters. Because of this, they enjoy comparatively comfortable positions in Grolnak.
