Vethsala the Molt Tongue

Biography Vethsala hails from a bloodline as old as Krog Nocrum’s stonework—one of the last surviving lines of pure-blooded yuan-ti witchdoctors who once presided over the city when it was home solely to scaled folk. Her family served as ritualists, guides, and death-singers in an age when tradition was law and spirit magic wound tightly through daily life.   Though that era has long since faded under waves of migration and change, Vethsala has not forgotten. She remains one of its loudest and most devoted voices. To her, magic is not just a tool—it is the spirit of the city itself, and to ignore it or modernize without care is to invite spiritual decay.   It is no secret that Vethsala holds deep suspicion—bordering on contempt—for outsiders like Zivrathi Dunechain, whom she considers not only culturally intrusive but spiritually hollow. She views the influx of commerce, flash, and foreign influence as a slow poison. While she publicly plays her part as a councilwoman, many believe she works tirelessly behind the scenes to pull lizardfolk and serpent-blooded citizens back into her fold.   Some whisper that her persuasive sway over the scaled populace is unnatural—that dark magic, whispers in sleep, and rites of blood may empower her influence. Vethsala, of course, never confirms such talk. She simply smiles, and offers blessings to those who ask.   Vethsala is a living relic of another age—ornate, serpentine, and composed. Her deep crimson and violet scales shimmer beneath a ceremonial wrap adorned with bone clasps, ancestral patterns, and shedding charms. Her elongated lower body moves with silent grace, her torso marked by ritual scars, paint, and talismans clutched against her heart.   Her headdress is crowned with fangs and woven braids, each decorated with fetishes from long-passed spirits. Her voice is soft and serpentine, yet carries a supernatural weight; when she speaks, even loud markets fall quiet. Her staff, carved with the faces of ancient gods, is said to tremble when someone lies in her presence.   As the Witchdoctor Representative of the Coil of Nocrum, Vethsala oversees the spiritual well-being of the city and the preservation of magical tradition. She operates from her sanctum deep in the market district, where the scent of incense, bloodroot smoke, and old rituals clings to the air.   She offers rituals of passage, cures for spiritual ailments, and charms for protection, but only to those she deems of proper respect. Her influence among the serpent-blooded and lizardfolk populations is quietly growing. Some believe she seeks to create a caste-within-the-caste—a sacred lineage returned to power.   Though she spars with Zivrathi during council meetings, often dismissing her ideas with veiled barbs, she maintains a strangely respectful bond with Nharzul Lorebone. She appreciates his memory and preservation, though she wishes he would act with more aggression in protecting Krog Nocrum’s old ways.   Vethsala sees the city’s growing diversity as a tide—not inherently evil, but dangerous if left unchanneled. It is her mission, through both ritual and politics, to ensure the ancient pulse of Krog Nocrum does not go silent beneath foreign footsteps.
