Morghal Varn

Morghal Varn, the Hollow-Willed

Grave Guard of the Restless Dead

“No pulse. No breath. No hesitation.”

Backstory

Long ago, in the cursed valley of Nachthold, there was a man — or at least the shape of one — who stood vigil at the gates of a forgotten barrow. No one knew his name. No one dared speak to him. Children whispered that he never moved, never slept, never left. They called him “the Watcher of the Mound.” When war came and fire swept the land, even the dead were disturbed — but he remained.

Centuries later, when necromantic storms rose from Mordheim’s broken heart, the barrows of Nachthold cracked open. From one of them stepped a figure in black-iron plate, face hidden behind a mask that bore neither emotion nor soul. The runes on his shield had long since faded. His sword had rusted into silence. But still, he walked.

He was given the name Morghal Varn by those who summoned him. But whether it was a name he had worn in life, or one forged from the dreams of liches, no one could say. He does not speak. He does not remove his helm. He does not fall unless cut to pieces.

To the Restless Dead, he is a bulwark.
To the living, a nightmare.
To the necromancers who raised him… a perfect servant.
Except that sometimes, they say, when all is quiet…
He does not answer.

  • Some whisper he has not forgotten everything, and that his soul may not be wholly lost

Appearance Details

  • Wears blackened armor fused to his rotted flesh
  • His face is forever hidden beneath a sculpted death-mask, neither man nor beast
  • His cloak bears the sigil of a forgotten order — crossed grave keys and a shut gate

Rumors & Secrets

  • Some say Morghal was once a Grail Knight who fell to despair and was cursed to serve undeath in penance
  • Others claim his mask cannot be removed, not even by magic, and that his skull is made of obsidian
  • It is believed he cannot be destroyed in Mordheim — only banished temporarily
  • A few necromancers fear he’s becoming self-aware, and when the time comes… he will choose his own master
