Enoch Virellion

Brother-Marshall Enoch Virellion

Warden of the Sacred Perimeter, Order of Saint Hieronymus

"I do not guard the Chapel. I guard what the Chapel restrains."

Rank & Role
Brother-Marshall Virellion holds the ancient title of Warden of the Sacred Perimeter, a role second only to the High Judicator himself. It is his duty to enforce the internal security of the Order, oversee all military patrols and purges, and—most notably—guard the sealed catacombs beneath the Chapel of Red Glass, where whispers say something far worse than wyrdstone lies entombed.

Where High Judicator Holt is theological and philosophical in his rulings, Virellion is the sword that delivers them. He does not interpret scripture. He executes it.

Backstory
Born in the wastelands near the ruins of Solland, Enoch Virellion was a war-orphan raised by flagellants and mendicants. He never learned to read. Instead, he learned the language of bludgeons, barricades, and broken jaws. He was discovered by the Order during a purge of a heretic enclave—where they found him standing amidst twelve corpses, bloodied but unbowed, reciting a single phrase over and over: “Pain is proof.”

He rose swiftly through the Order, not by eloquence or vision, but by utter fearlessness. At one point, a fellow knight accused him of “embracing the savagery of the enemy.” Virellion’s response was to cut off his own left ring finger—“the finger of oath”—and hand it to the Grandmaster, saying, “If my fury ever shames my vow, burn this. If not, bury it with me.” The Grandmaster kept it. He still does.

Personality

  • Blunt, laconic, and unwavering
  • Reveres discipline above all things, even faith
  • Speaks rarely—when he does, others go silent
  • Has no interest in mercy, but a deep code of fairness

Appearance

  • Weathered face, long gray hair, thick beard, sun-scarred skin
  • Wears his armor constantly, even during rest
  • His red cross is stitched over old bloodstains—never cleaned
  • Always carries a massive longsword and a reinforced steel shield engraved with the Eye of Hieronymus
  • His surcoat is marked with the sigil of the Warden—an iron ring encircling a sword point-down

Rumors & Secrets

  • Some say he’s immune to wyrdstone corruption—having once survived an explosion of raw stone dust to the face
  • Others believe he has no soul left, having burned it in a ritual to protect the Order
  • It is whispered that he knows the true nature of what lies beneath the Chapel of Red Glass
  • He never removes his armor in front of others—not even to sleep

Relationship to Others

  • High Judicator Holt: Loyal to death, but occasionally serves as a voice of pragmatic restraint
  • Penitent Cultists: Orders immediate execution—no trials
  • Civilians and warbands: Tolerates only if sanctioned by the Order; otherwise, treated as potential threats
  • Priests of Morr: Respectful, but distrustful—“They bury evil. I destroy it.”

Equipment

  • Execution Longsword (The Vowblade)
  • +1 Strength, +1 Initiative in the first round of combat
  • On a wound roll of 6: target suffers no armor save, regardless of rules
  • If used to kill a character model, Virellion may declare “Sentence Fulfilled” and gain +1 Attack until the end of the next battle round.
  • Warden’s Bastion (Reinforced Shield)
  • 3+ armor save in melee (cannot be reduced below 5+ by Strength)
  • Enemies in base contact suffer -1 to hit if they charged this turn
  • The Ring of Iron Oath (Worn Relic)
  • If reduced to 0 Wounds for the first time in a battle, make a Toughness test:
  • Success = Enoch stands back up with 1 Wound next turn
  • Failure = He dies, and an explosion of force knocks back models in base contact (Strength 3 hit, auto knockdown)

Special Rules

Unyielding Discipline

  • Immune to Stun
  • Immune to All Alone
  • Always strikes back when knocked down or wounded (one free attack before falling)

The Sword of the Sentence

  • Enoch may interrupt enemy movement once per game: choose one charging model within 6"—on a successful Initiative test, intercept it mid-charge and engage in combat instead.

Warden of the Depths

  • Any enemy within 6" who fails a Fear, Panic, or Leadership test suffers -1 to their next roll (as if caught in his silent gaze)
  • Undead models within 6" lose Immunity to Psychology for the turn (once per game)

Battlefield Role & Scenario Integration

  • Zone Guardian: Use him to guard crypt entrances, catacomb doors, or sealed tombs beneath the Chapel of Red Glass.
  • Duel Enforcer: Can be called by Holt mid-game to "settle a heresy" in single combat.
  • Honor or Death: A warband may be given the chance to escape purging if their leader defeats Virellion in a sacred duel.

Suggested Behavior Table (AI Mode)

At the start of Virellion’s turn, roll a D6:

1–2: Steel Discipline – Moves to shield a key location or allied character
3–4: Purge Protocol – Charges the model with highest Toughness or visible mutations
5: Pain is Proof – Enters Frenzy (+1A, must charge if possible)
6: Catacomb Watcher – Retreats 3” toward the Chapel if within 12”, issuing a warning to intruders
