Winter Wraith
Winter Wraiths are living manifestations of the unrelenting fury of a blizzard, the icy heart of winter given form. They are not undead spirits, despite their spectral appearance, but rather elemental beings born from the raw, unbridled power of snowstorms. Their presence is marked by an otherworldly chill, a deep, bone-numbing cold that freezes water in an instant and causes the very air to crystallize. Wherever a Winter Wraith treads, frost spreads across the ground, leaving a frozen wake as a silent testament to their power.
They are cloaked in flowing white robes that ripple and billow as though caught in an eternal, unseen wind. These robes seem to merge with the blizzard-like maelstroms that swirl beneath them, obscuring any solid form. Beneath the robes, there is no physical body, only a vortex of freezing snow, jagged shards of ice, and biting winds that howl in a chilling cadence. This endless storm within them is their essence, the core of their existence, and it is said that gazing too deeply into this swirling void can evoke feelings of despair and isolation, as though the viewer were lost in an endless winter.
Winter Wraiths have no face, no true features, only the suggestion of a hooded figure where their head might be, the depths of which are filled with swirling frost and faint, ghostly light. Their movements are graceful yet unnerving, gliding silently across the ground as if carried by the storm itself. Despite their ethereal grace, their presence is anything but subtle; the temperature plummets wherever they go, frost creeping up walls, water freezing solid in an instant, and breaths turning to mist that hangs heavily in the air.
These beings are not inherently malevolent, but their very existence is destructive to anything unprepared for the cold. They embody the impartial, merciless force of nature, neither cruel nor kind, simply existing as a manifestation of winter’s most extreme aspects. A Winter Wraith’s power is not wielded with intent to harm but as a natural consequence of their presence, making them both awe-inspiring and terrifying.
Legends tell of Winter Wraiths being bound to specific places or events, such as a perpetual blizzard over a cursed mountain or the eternal winter of a forgotten glade. In these locations, they serve as guardians or embodiments of the icy force that sustains the storm. While they are often solitary, they can sometimes be found in the service of powerful winter fey or deities, acting as emissaries or enforcers of their frozen will.
