Tjorvi Cnutsson
Bester of Ran
Tjorvi Cnutsson is a relatively new addition to the Northlander Hero Gods. He was the captain of the longship, Barufakr (Rhytham for Wave Horse). Tjorvi's ship set out with several other ships to perform a raid on a village in a neighboring isle. Along the way, the fleet hit a tremendous storm and highly churning seas. When storms rage so fierce and waves on the waters rise to meet the storm above, many Northlanders consider that to be Ran and Tempest making love. The waves and storm dashed and sank all of the other ships in the fleet, leaving just the Barufakr, though without a sail and in open water near no familiar marker.
Tjorvi's had just twelve crew remaining after the storm, no mast, and scant provisions. The crew of the Barufakr began to offer prayers to the goddess Ran to beg for her mercy to allow them to reach land. Tjorvi forbade his crew to offer her prayer, and instead, cursed her for bringing them the waters that destroyed the fleet and left them in this situation. With determination Tjorvi fought against the obstacles that Ran continued to throw at them. The crew fished, getting enough food to feed them, and Tjorvi collected rainwater with the fallen sail to keep enough fresh water for the crew to survive on, all the while daring Ran to come for them.
In the end, Tjorvi held out against Ran. Lost at sea for 90 days, the Barutakr found port with the twelve crewmembers still alive. The crew told the stories of how Tjorvi challenged and dared Ran and still bested her. It is said that from that point on, whenever Tjorvi entered the sea, Ran knew her place and gave favorable waters to Tjorvi.
The Northmen today still retell Tjorvi's story and some ask for Tjorvi's guidance in the waters over Ran.
