The Hunger
Thormod Gudasson, a Northlander sailor, arrived at the Gentleman's League Guildhall asking to hire the party to take him to a ship to return him to his home. He stated that he was the sole survivor of his last expedition where the mast was destroyed and he floated out with the crew. He had enough water from the rains, but there was no food on the ship. He said that he had prayed to Tempest and Ran, but they did not answer his prayers, so he turned his back on them and was lucky to make it back to land at all.
The party believed that he wasn't telling them the full story, but agreed to take him. During breakfast before heading out they noticed that he had a ravenous appetite that did not seem to satiate. While traveling, Levi overheard him saying quiet prayers to himself in Rhytham:
The first gift is hunger.
It is His blessing.
It is our call to bring death.
The second gift is death.
Death proves our strength.
Death purges our fear.
The third gift is fear;
We fear that we will fail him.
We fear the onset of hunger.
As they followed Thormod's directions, he led them to a planned ambush by gnolls who had already attacked a farmhouse. They took Thormod's journal and found that he was on the ship with the crew, but as he grew hungrier and hungrier, he cursed the gods Ran and Tempest for leaving him to die and heard a new voice offering to save him. It was Yeenoghu, a demon of hunger who had obtained godhood, and he aided Thormod by guiding him to kill the crew and to eat them for strength, and now wanted Thormod to lead more meat to his gnoll worshippers. The party rescued the farmers and slew the gnolls as well as Thormod.
