Thane

A thane is the ruler of a dwarven citadel, a position that combines sovereign authority with deep cultural responsibility. More than a simple noble, a thane is expected to embody the strength, endurance, and traditions of their clan and hold, presiding over matters of law, defense, craft, and ancestral honor. A thane oversees the citadel’s forges, halls, and warriors, arbitrates disputes between clans or guilds, and speaks for the hold in dealings with outsiders. While the title may be hereditary, a thane’s legitimacy is sustained through competence and respect—dwarves expect their ruler to understand stone, steel, and sacrifice, and a thane who proves unworthy may find their authority quietly but firmly challenged by clan elders and council alike.
