Session 58: Chekhov's Bottomless Pit
General Summary
The battle continues on by The Arcane Lock. Malthus cast sanctuary on himself, avoiding Bolvaic’s attacks, though Bolvaic the redirected his attacks on the Arcane Lock itself.The Chronos Slaad’s attacks caused Tertius to fall, but as Illevaere moved up, they were able to heal Tertius. Fortunately, Tertius was holding Bolvaic’s potions of healing and he quickly quaffed one to keep himself up longer.
Rieta’s wild magic surged, causing unpredictable events around her each round, including summoning three flumphs who immediately fled from her. Malthus broke his sanctuary in order to try to stop Bolvaic from attacking the Arcane Lock and, with his protection gone, Bolvaic grappled Malthus and pulled him into the great crevass that spanned the width of the room, potentially causing both of them to fall to their deaths.
Illevaere reacted swiftly, switching forms to a great eagle to fly to Bolvaic and swoop him up from the crevasse. However, when leaving the Chronos Slaad’s range, they were struck by a blow that pushed them ahead in the future, making them unable to rescue Bolvaic as he fell. However, Rieta, seeing both Malthus and Bolvaic falling, used her telekinesis, which she was still concentrating on, and snatched Bolvaic, bringing him back to the surface. However, she was too late to then save Malthus.
Ilbryen took a number of hits from the red slaad before them and retreated back to the kobolds to heal. Seeing the circumstances, Donk and Snirk both raced out to lend aid to the combatants and the young wolves all also joined the battle.
Tiarjead moved up and focused her attacks on the remaining chronos and red slaads as Illevaere used their magic to rend the earth around the final summoning circle. Levi and Tertius teamed up using different weapon damage types to avoid much of the resistances of the slaads and with Malthus gone, Rieta, and her multiple mirror images, turned to assist her former party members in attacking the remaining slaads. Ilbryen’s guiding bolt struck the chronos slaad, effectively killing it, although, technically, it retreated into an alternate timeline. Donk charged up across the bridge spanning the crevasse and entangled and restrained one of the slaad’s with his paladin ability.
With Malthus gone and the three summoning circles destroyed and only a couple of heavily injured slaads remaining, the battle was won by the party.
