Session 24: The Hangover

General Summary

Tertius and Ilbryen wake first and look for the others, however, they do not return to the Feasting Horde. Tertius wonders if they stayed at the flophouse, Piper’s Peek, or if they perhaps left without them. Ilbryen settles Tertius’ worries about them leaving the two of them behind.   The rest of the group are slower to wake at the Steel Hook. While most of the group are unaffected by the drinking the night before, Levi suffers from a horrible hangover that he is unable to shake even after breakfast and a bit of a rest. They decide to go and find Ilbryen and Tertius, finding them at the Feasting Horde.   Tertius reconciles with Levi, showing him one of the books he got from the library entitled, “The Squire and His Knight”. Tertius offers to teach Levi how to read the common language, provided that Levi helps him understand some of the concepts in the book. Tertius and Ilbryen also inform the group that Princess Ireltharis did not wish to court or romantically pursue Tertius, but rather wishes for he and his allies to discreetly aid her “friend”, a town watch member assigned to Lower Craftenor to help promote his advancement and career so that they can meet publicly.   While the group is not too concerned with helping the career of this watch member or in aiding Princess Ireltharis, they are concerned with the fact that people keep disappearing and they agree to help out. The group heads to a run down watch building in Lower Craftenor where they meet with Inspector Baremin Barleyhare. He is about eighteen years old and a strong, attractive human male.   Baremin informs the party that Ireltharis has sent him a message to expect the group and has two of his partners ready to speak about the investigation. Baremin informs the group that disappearances are not uncommon in Lower Craftenor, but usually the bodies show up floating in the river after a few days. However, two of the disappearances have an unusual connection. He introduces the party to Constable Darmiir Ashjaw, a short stout human who could be mistaken for a dwarf.   The disappearances would not have meant much in the grand scale of things, except that in investigating one of them, Darmiir found a witness. A child who was on the street named Grace Murtagh, who had said a giant creature came out of an alleyway and no one seemed to see it but her. She said that she saw it grab the fellow they were looking for, Horner Fasthare, a petty criminal and pull him back into the alleyway where it devoured him with two bites. The creature looked at her and moved toward her and she screamed, attracting the attention of others in the street and the creature turned and fled. No one else saw the creature, but there was a pool of fresh blood in the alleyway. Darmiir asked for the girl to describe the creature and he sketched out what she had seen and he drew it.   The creature was described as having a “bunch of eyes all over its face”, “a big mouth with pointy teeth”, “vine-like arms” and “big, with spider legs”. It was also all black, but its eyes were red.   There wasn’t too much attention paid to the idea of a creature that no one else could see and other than Darmiir making a sketch from the child’s description, the lead was not followed up on until another disappearance was investigated a week later. Baremin introduces the party to Constable Davry Davryson, a happy-go-lucky halfling who followed up on the next disappearance investigation.   This time, the disappearance was one of the trader-merchants in Lower Craftenor who went missing, Eoghan Dillon. His shop was robbed, so Baremin thought that it was simply that he was killed and the thieves robbed his wares. However, when asking around, a young boy from across the street, Senan Kerrane, said that he saw a giant black creature break down the door and pull out the merchant and eat him in two bites. He had Davry sketch the creature based on the boy’s description and Davry’s picture is much more representative than Darmiir.   Ilbryen and Tertius went back to the library to research creatures such as this. Ilbryen found a bit of information, but whatever it is was not a well-known creature.   The watch took the group to see the two witnesses. Grace recounted the creature and that no one else could see it except for her and the man that it swallowed in two bites. When she screamed and drew attention, the creature fled. When the group visited Senan to listen to his story, they also had a chance to investigate the scene of the attack. Senan saw the creature from his window across the street, stating that the merchant tried to hold onto the door frame as he was pulled back, then swallowed with two bites.   Investigating the scene, the group found evidence that made it appear as if the merchant was trying to hold onto the door as he was pulled away. They also noticed that some of the wood seemed to have rotted unevenly and there was a strong scent of mildew in the wood. This was the only thing that stood out to the group.   The group decided to return to question Grace further, but on the way back, Levi saw the creature as it attacked him, grabbing him and pulling him towards its maw. The rest of the party could not see the creature. Levi pulled away and escaped from being swallowed, and the party tried to fight the creature that they could not see. However, it fled and Levi could no longer see it. The party tried following the scent of mildew that was left behind, but it was lost out in the streets. Injured and still hung over, Levi was in poor condition and the group decided that they needed to regroup and heal before pursuing the creature further.
