Mayor
A mayor is he chief civic official of a town or city, responsible for managing its day-to-day affairs on behalf of its citizens and, often, a higher noble authority. Unlike hereditary nobles, a mayor is typically appointed by a lord or elected from among influential townsfolk such as guildmasters, merchants, or landholders. Their duties include overseeing markets and trade, organizing local defenses and watchmen, enforcing town laws, collecting taxes or tolls owed to the crown or lord, and representing the town’s interests in negotiations. While a mayor’s power is usually limited to urban boundaries, their influence can be substantial in prosperous cities where commerce, guilds, and coin grant leverage rivaling that of lesser nobles.
