Jenny Greenteeth
Jenny Greenteeth (a.k.a. Jenny East, Wicked Jenny, Ginny Greenteeth, Grinteeth, Jeanie Greenteeth)
Jenny Greenteeth, the Water Hag who serves as an advisor to Narahm, ruler of the Seafoam Court, is a terrifying figure of both cunning and malice. She is a creature of the water's edge, lurking in the shadows beneath lily pads and cattails beneath the duck weed, waiting with eerie patience for an unwary victim to draw close. Her skin is a sickly greenish-gray, slick and waterlogged, sagging as though stretched too thin over her wiry, sinewy frame. Her face is gaunt and bloated by turns, her eyes sunken yet glinting with an unnatural light, and her teeth—jagged and sharp as broken glass—jut out from a wide, hungry grin. Long strands of stringy, algae-like hair cling to her scalp, trailing behind her in the murky water like strands of rotting kelp.
Jenny’s arms are her most fearsome feature, unnaturally long and sinuous, capable of stretching impossibly far to snatch the unwary. Her gnarled, claw-like fingers move with terrifying precision, pulling her prey beneath the surface with a vice-like grip that promises certain doom. She delights in dragging her victims—most often children or the frail—into the suffocating embrace of the water, feeding on their terror as much as their flesh. Once beneath the waves, her victims are consumed slowly, their bones meticulously cleaned and carved into grim portents she inscribes with her mastery of scrimshaw. These macabre etchings reveal twisted glimpses of the future, secrets that Jenny shares only with Narahm and those she deems worthy of her knowledge.
Jenny’s voice is a weapon as potent as her claws. She sings a haunting, lilting tune, her melodious voice drifting over the water like a sweet lullaby, drawing travelers and wanderers closer to their demise. The song is almost birdlike in its beauty, designed to charm and disarm, masking the deadly trap that lies beneath. Only when it is too late do her victims see the bloated, monstrous face grinning up at them from the depths, her teeth bared and ready to feast.
Despite her monstrous form and vile habits, Jenny Greenteeth is an intelligent and resourceful advisor. She is one of the Seafoam Court’s most trusted strategists, her intimate knowledge of the waterways and dark magics of the deep invaluable to Narahm. Her portents, carved into her gruesome scrimshaw relics, are said to always come true, though their meanings are often wrapped in layers of cruel irony and misdirection. She speaks with a voice as slimy and smooth as the muck at the bottom of her lair, her words often layered with riddles and hidden threats.
Though her loyalty to Narahm is unquestionable, her motivations are her own. She harbors a deep, seething hatred for humanity, born from her origins as Jenny East, a jilted bride who drowned herself in despair and rose again through a dark pact. She has long since forgotten the warmth and joy of her mortal life, consumed by the cold, cruel hunger of her new existence. Now, Jenny Greenteeth serves as a reminder of the dangers that lurk in the hidden, murky places of the world, a creature of spite and vengeance who revels in the fear she sows and the flesh she devours.
Her lair is a reflection of her nature: a stagnant, reeking pool surrounded by creeping moss and skeletal remains, her gruesome scrimshaw trophies displayed as a gallery of decay and prophecy. She is a predator, a seer, and a monster, forever waiting in the shadows for the next poor soul to wander too close to her watery domain.
The Daoine have a rhyme used to warn children from heading too close to waters' edges called The Story of Jenny Greenteeth.
