Jarl
A jarl is a high-ranking noble or chieftain in Northlander culture, roughly equivalent to a count or duke, though rooted more in personal authority than inherited bureaucracy. A jarl rules a territory through strength, reputation, and loyalty rather than rigid feudal law, commanding warriors, presiding over courts, and protecting the people under their banner. Their power depends heavily on honor, successful leadership in war or raiding, and the ability to reward followers with land, wealth, and glory. Unlike many southern nobles, a jarl is expected to lead from the front—fighting beside their warriors, settling disputes personally, and proving, again and again, that they deserve to be followed.
