Black Bill

Black Bill

Black Bill, Knight of Álfheimr and sworn protector of the Queen of Elphame, is a striking figure in the Fey realms, an imposing Corvid warrior clad entirely in black. Tall and lean with the regal bearing of a raven, Black Bill’s face is marked by a sharp, ebony beak, and his keen, intelligent eyes glint with a cunning intelligence that few can match. His feathers are a glossy midnight hue, reflecting light in subtle iridescent tones, and his movements are as swift and silent as a shadow, blending seamlessly into the dimness of enchanted forests and twilight glades.   Draped in dark leathers and feathered cloaks that flow like smoke around him, Black Bill’s attire is minimal yet unmistakably fey—stitched with intricate patterns resembling feathers and talons and enchanted to shift with his body’s movements. His long, taloned fingers grip a sleek, blackened spear, said to be crafted from the heartwood of an ancient tree blessed by the Queen herself, and whispered to carry the weight of long-forgotten curses. Every piece of his gear is bound with subtle enchantments to ward off unwanted eyes and deflect attacks, making him an elusive figure who often appears and vanishes as swiftly as a passing breeze.   Following in Black Bill’s wake is a mischief of magpies, each with eyes as sharp and watchful as his own. This mischief of magpies is more than just a band of loyal birds—they are harbingers of omens, their shifting numbers and behavior foretelling fates both grand and grim. The Daoine rhyme of Thirteen Magpies speaks of the orinthomancy of Black Bill's magpies, as well as any others found. The fey of Álfheimr and even the Queen herself respect the magpies as Black Bill’s diviners, for they often see things beyond mortal or fey perception, their calls carrying messages from realms unseen.   As a knight, Black Bill is more than a mere warrior; he is a symbol of Álfheimr’s silent, watchful protection, guarding against threats that would dare to disturb the Queen of Elphame’s lands. Though his manner is reserved and almost detached, he has a fierce loyalty to the Queen and an unyielding dedication to his duties. His speech is quick, sharp, and often delivered with a dry wit that many find unsettling, for it is rumored he sees truths others would rather ignore.   Black Bill’s reputation among other courts is that of a mysterious yet honorable knight, his presence a foreboding reminder of both Álfheimr’s strength and the Queen’s power over fate itself. Tales say he can sense lies and deceit with an uncanny accuracy, his magpies guiding him toward truths that even the most skilled tricksters cannot conceal. To cross Black Bill is to invite both his spear and the ominous judgment of his magpie entourage, and few are bold enough to risk their pointed beaks and piercing cries. Black Bill embodies the Court of Álfheimr’s watchfulness, a silent specter of loyalty and fate wrapped in black feathers and shadows, always vigilant in his duty to the Queen of Elphame.
