Illuminated Empire of the Mòvadhi
Overview
The Illuminated Empire of the Mòvadhi – Das Erlauchte Mòvadhische Reich – is a federated monarchy. The Emperor is elected by the Kollegium, a council of electors comprised of the Open Electors, who are various dukes and archdukes, Church hierarchs, as well as a number of Privy Electors, who are nominated in secret by the previous Emperor himself, and whose votes are not made plain. In practice it is rare for the Electors to elect anyone other than the declared heir of the previous emperor, although there have been schisms which have even led to bitter conflict spanning generations. The Mòvadhi Emperor styles himself as the Great Sovereign of the Illuminated Empire of the Mòvadhi and its Marks, Steward of the Sacred Sites, and Harbinger of Redemption. The Sacred Sites refer, in Mòvadh’s official policy, also to the Temple City of Zarathenis, leading to great enmity with the High Magistrate. There has been no open war for some time, but border conflicts flare up regularly, especially in the eastern Forstmark, where large swathes of territory are disputed and loyalties are divided.Regions
The Empire is made up of five somewhat loosely defined areas:The Imperial Heartland
Formally, the Kingdoms of Sariya and Mòvadh and its Vassals – forms the core of the Empire and the seat of its rulers. The Emperor is also the Grand Duke of the Provinces of the Heartland.The Mountain Duchies
These are made up of the Duchies of Bânât, Hoszmesovasar, and Koszvoloi; the latter is the seat of the Grand Duke whose vassals the Dukes of Bânât and Hoszmesovasar are. Originally independent, the Mountain Duchies came to the Mòvadhi empire in 1235HR.The Südmark
The Südmark has a strong independent-minded streak, somewhat influenced by the Mercantile Realms to the south. It is ruled by a triumvirate of three Grand Dukes and a Magister. The Südmark has traditionally produced the finest mercenaries of the Empire.The Nordmark
This is a thickly-wooded, mountainous, trackless country ruled over by a collection of petty lords, mercenary war bands, robber kings, and small cities defended against the beasts and monsters of the Forest with bitter tenacity. No Grand Duke of the Nordmark has set foot into his country in centuries, except to hunt, preferring to hold court in the Summer Residence at Rhevensfurth.The Forstmark
Traditionally known as Lhünen, the Forstmark is a forested, hilly country somewhat recently obtained from the Sacred Magisterial Domain through a combination of guile, strategic marriages, and conquest.
