Orla Fiddlefen Character in Mito Mondo | World Anvil

Orla Fiddlefen

Orla Fiddlefen (a.k.a. Fiddles)

Orla tends to follow the rules and guidelines set down by her Cloister and the Wizard under which she apprenticed. These rules, she believes, keeps you safe, sane, and functional despite the work she does with the dead, and undead, of all varieties. Sometimes these rules and guidelines don't exactly line up with what a lot of people think of as appropriate, and sometimes they're more trouble than they seem worth, but she holds onto them tightly. She does right by society, believing that anything she does is for protecting those who can't help themselves and that going out of her way to help out is the right thing to do.   Orla is always looking to improve herself through study. Be it through practical, hands-on, knowledge or through reading books or studying ancient societies. She believes that the goal of her life, of anyone's lives really, is to study and be better overall because of it, and this drives everything she does. If she can't find some way to improve herself and her skills she becomes quickly frustrated and snappy.   Orla is protecting an ancient text she was given by her Wizard Master and charged with protecting it with her life. She has read through this text and discovered that it holds terrible secrets and has quickly discovered that it must not fall into the wrong hands or else there will be dire consequences not just for her, but for all of Mito Mondo. For this reason she allows no one to touch, look at, or even think about the book, making her seem quite defensive when questioned about it.   She also believes that unlocking ancient mysteries can be worth the price of a civilization. Her desire to learn burns strong and as long as she's not breaking, or even bending, any of the rules laid down by her wizard master that she will pay the price required to delve deep into the ancient mysteries, a lot of them brought to her attention by the very ancient text she holds so close to her chest.   Her Intelligence is her strongest trait. She studies everything, putting it all to memory so that she can access the information later on when she most needs it. She also has a habit of using very large and complex words, causing her companions to question where in the world she got her education.   Her Strength is her weakest trait. She's so small that most mundane items are far too large and heavy and clunky for her to even try lifting or carrying. She usually looks to her companions to carry her things for her and isn't afraid to ask them for help in lifting and moving things.   Being a Cloistered Scholar means that she has a much better access to the libraries of her Cloister. It also gives her advantage, as a scholar, when she wishes to research something at other libraries or places of learning for they usually respect her works and efforts in her field of study. She also has quite a lot of personal knowledge about her Cloister and can work the connections she's forged there in order to find things out that she might not otherwise be able to find alone.   Being a Rock Gnome gives her advantage in being able to see in the dark, she's also got a better resistance against spells used against her, and she's good at being able to identify magical, alchemic, or technological items without having to use a spell for it. Having been raised underground she finds the sky both fascinating and frightening and tends to keep a wary eye on it until such time as she's indoors and feels she's not about float off. She's got a knack for making mechanical toys and other objects and loves to work on these in any free time she finds available.   At the age of forty she's considered an adult and pretty much free to travel off on her own without provoking worry about her adventures. At this time she remains under the occasional tutelage of her wizard master, but also encouraged to travel the world and continue her studies with others who have a different range of skills and experiences than the ones of her master. She still has a long life ahead of her, a lot of her family living well into their four hundred year mark.   She is very short at barely three foot eight and thirty eight pounds. This causes many problems, mostly with her not being able to carry a lot, and also not being able to reach things like door handles, or windows, or get up onto chairs. She takes these things as a challenge however and doesn't let them stop her from getting about in a world made for larger people. Her short stature and small size at least means that she's often treated to riding along on Shava's back or Stomm's shoulder.   Orla knows, backwards, forwards, upside down, and otherwise, Common, Dwarvish, Halfling and Gnomish. She's studied these languages so hard that she knows many variations and can speak, read, and write them all quite fluently or at least enough to get by if she ever has to use them. This makes it advantageous when it comes to getting around the world where mostly everyone speaks Common, and especially in small-people society.   Orla studied very hard as a Cloistered Scholar, devoting all her time and energy to learning everything that her Wizard Master had to teach her and reading through all the books in the parts of the library that were open to her. She became an adventurer when she was shooed from the Cloister and sent out to learn all there was in the wilder world. Her family was, still is, uncertain of this but they do their best to support her even if they don't personally agree with it. She really sees herself as no different than any other Cloistered Scholar despite her achievements in such a short time.
