Zarian Dai Character in Mythrite | World Anvil

Zarian Dai

Zarian Dai came to Mythrite without any particular plans to put down roots. He didn’t need glory, wealth, or even anything that particularly looked like success. It would just be another town where he could work for a few years, keep his head down and his stomach full, make a few friends, and then pick up his small collection of belongings and never speak to any of them again. When he first got word about the flood of settlers to Mythrite, it sounded no different than any of the towns that came before. Nine months after his arrival, his name would come up regularly in discussions of The Halberd's growing tensions. For once, instead of avoiding controversy, he claimed it. It was something about Mythrite, the potential and energy that filled every room and corridor-like smoke, that brought out a spirit that Zarian hadn’t seen in himself since his childhood.   His work as a miner earned him enough to live on at first, but with his decades of experience, he would also gain a reputation in the settlement as a useful prospector and mentor. This supplementary work allowed him to cut back on the labor that was starting, even at his relatively young age, to put an ache in his back. The tight, uncomfortable accommodations of The Halberd were of no surprise to him, and while he kept to himself at first, over time the crowded conditions became a way for him to develop his influence.   He was a perfectly good miner, but it was his other activities that gave his name prominence.   In the beginning, he was simply organizing those he shared his living space with. They agreed to work together, pooling funds when needed, protecting those in danger, and keeping an eye on each other’s possessions. An informal pact of neighborly courtesy grew and became, in some ways, a community of its own, with Zarian at its helm.   As his influence grew, his flaws became more glaring to those outside of his direct influence. While he was outwardly a jovial, excitable person, Zarian was also quick to turn on people. A friend could become a bitter rival with one mistake, with little opportunity for explanation or apology, and this condemnatory nature often extended to his inner circle and the actions of his group as a whole.   Lately, Zarian only grows more controversial as incidences of vigilante justice and notable generosity are both increasingly attributed to his organization. Those who prefer the independence and freedom of life in Mythrite grow concerned with this informal and sometimes overzealous system of justice, while those who feel a sense of helplessness in The Halberd seek out the relative structure that they provide.
