An Eye for Value

A concept for an adventure set (in part) in the city of Aarven

In Aarven, the City of Change, objects—and people!—are in constant flux, transforming apparently at random from one state to another. Things don't usually disappear altogether, however—but lately just that has been happening, with valuable objects vanishing even from sealed containers. To add to the mystery, one day in the middle of a street a man happens to transform into a gold statue—which in and of itself isn't an especially odd occurrence in Aarven—and then suddenly disappears—which is.

The root of the matter turns out to lie in one of the other eidopoles: Iaian, the City of Eyes. A resident of Iaian has built a racket out of hiring an army of assistants to survey Aarven through thurls, the viewing portals that are found all over Iaian, and alerting him when Aarven's random transformations happen to turn something into a particularly valuable object—whereupon he'll magically translocate the treasure to his location where, outside of Aarven, it will remain in its current form. In order to stop the ransacking of Aarven—and retrieve any important items stolen or people abducted, like the man turned into a gold statue—the PCs may have to travel to Iaian and confront the responsible party—which means making it past his helpers and defenses.
