All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Tears for Fears - Mad World

Lea ran up the stairs from the subway. The soft moans of the junkies, who wailed in the shadows of the walls after their next trip to heaven, accompanied her. It was a familiar background noise, as were the shots she could hear in the distance. She pulled her handbag closer to her stomach. Even if this was one of the better parts of downtown, this was no reason for recklessness. Better today only meant that the police patrol was more heavily armed and a little more motivated every 15 minutes.

She looked around in all directions as she headed home, jerking at every sound. But she didn’t notice the shadow that followed her unobtrusively all the way into her apartment. Not until his fangs bored into her carotid artery and her fresh blood ran down his throat. The genuine dangers of the city are always good at hiding themselves.

The change of millennia has gone, and people still cower in fear of the things that may happen. No one seems to notice the subtle changes in the world, the waves of awakening. Methuselahs rise from their slumber that lasted for centuries. Werewolf packs feel threatened in their territories as the cities expand. Undiscovered forms of magic even influence technology. Demons and devils take advantage of the world’s increasing decadence to incite people to ever new evils.

The problem with the situation is that the supernatural world must remain hidden from people. This is not always so easy, and the number of hunters is increasing from night to night. And these hunters make no difference between those who kill and those who do not.
