Silvethryn

The Silvethryn is an insectoid species with crystalline wings that are said to shimmer in the sunlight, they are harmless to humans and the like and are by many believed to be guardians of the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural. Some believe that the Silvethryn are acts as familiar for water and tree spirits and that these spirits use these creatures as a way of observing the world of the mortals from a distance.   Sometimes they are mistaken for Neraspids as the two species are closely related but by closer inspection, the differences begin to become more clear, especially the wings, with the Silvethryn having larger and more rigid wings with the Neraspids having more fragile wings.   Being an agile flyer the Silvethryn make it a near-perfect predatory insect as they have been known to clear out other insects from things such as houses when a Silvethryn somehow has found its way inside. Their favourite habitat is near forested rivers and lakes but a sub-species are known to live near the coastal regions, with the coastal ones being notably larger and have been observed to fly further out over the sea. Likewise, the coastal Silvethryn are closely observed during seasons with bad weather as they are known to be able to feel if either a storm or hurricane is on its way, some have been credited with the survival of settlements that would otherwise have been devastated by tsunamis.   Silvethryn is represented in human and elven culture on artefacts like pottery, statues and jewellery, with the elves taking a liking to the Silvethryn jewellery. Across many human cultures, they are seen as symbols of courage, strength and happiness, some see them as sinister but the thing they have in common is their role as guardians.

I like that they can almost be seen as like guardians, clearing out houses of other pests and warning of bad weather.
