Great Crown

Great Crown is a colony settled by veterans from the legions. In the early days of the Kingdom of Dercia  such colonies were often set up as the need for a suitable reward for the service of the veterans. Still, the senate, monarch, and the Kingdom as a whole saw that there was a need to settle the newly conquered land with settlers as a means of assimilation of the local population.   When Great Crown was settled, each of the 300 veterans and their families was given between 1-2.5 hectares of agricultural land as well as free use of the common state land (Land owned by the crown)   The colony is located on the edge of a large bay which provides the settlement with a good amount of fresh fish and other seafood as well as giving the settlement access to trade by sea which helped the settlement during the early days before it was entirely self-sufficient.   By the time Great Crown were settled, the practice of the colonies being settled as a military colony with the intent to defend Crienic territory had been slowly replaced by the intent of settling the veterans and integrating the locals which came across in the layout of the settlement as unlike some of the earlier colonies, Great Crown have no walls and the veterans settled there were selected with the purpose of them finding local wives to better integrate the settlement and the locals.   Great Crown act as the local meeting place for the locals as its the largest town in the local region and has the best connections to the rest of the Empire of Dercia with its good roads and the harbour which yearly hosts a market that attracts a number of minor tradesmen.

The history of the place is fascinating, particularly as it marked a change in how colonies were formed. The map makes it look like a nice little town.
