Treffin’s Horse

Basic Information

Anatomy

Treffin’s horse is very similar anatomically to the common horse, simply scaled up a bit, save for the muscle mass on its legs being significantly greater. The primary morphological distinction between the two species is the vast majority of these horses being either grey or black with grey socks.

Ecology and Habitats

Like most horses, wild Treffin’s horses do well in temperate climates. Because of their size and speed, their preferred habitat is wide and open. Since Treffin’s horse is a species that is entirely artificially bred, however, they have no natural predators and are invasive in most ecological systems.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Treffin’s horse is a herbivorous species, relying upon a diet of grass and grain, while also able to digest fruits. On average, despite their bulkier size than the common horse, they were bred to have much more efficient metabolisms and so require less feeding. Many owners of these horses don’t know this, and end up overfeeding them.

Additional Information

Domestication

Treffin’s horse is the ultimate product of selective breeding for horse races, so divorced from the common horse that it is now considered its own separate species from the common or wild horse. It’s bigger, faster, and stronger than the common horse due to this, as well as having a longer lifespan.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

While initially used for horse racing, that sport was banned in 2194 as part of the Ethical Sporting Accord. As such, these days the horses usually serve as workhorses for industrial farms - especially those specimens with higher stamina than their brethren - or as exotic pets for richer members of the populace.

Average Intelligence

Treffin’s horse, while by no means a sapient species, is quite intelligent and easily trained. Compared to species of the past, their intelligence level is about on par with that of a 21st century dog. It is thought that they were bred for this because smarter horses could get used to the track faster.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Treffin’s horse has average eyesight, due to not being specifically bred for it. However, members of the species are extraordinarily good at dealing with sudden changes in brightness in their vicinity, able to get used to new light levels very quickly. They’re also well adapted to hearing loud noises, able to withstand much higher volumes than the average common horse.
