Chaild’s Fen

History

Chaild’s Fen’s history starts in the 1820s, back when it was known as Wicken Fen. Famous scientist Charles Darwin, as well as many other victorian scientists, collected beetles and other insects there during that era, a practice which was emulated by others until Chaild’s Monster was discovered.

In 1899, the fen became one of the first nature reserves taken in by the National Trust (now part of the group known as the Europa Conservation Organisation), starting with 2 acres owned by the trust, and growing to 14,080 acres over the course of the next 200 years, peaking in 2086.

For a while, the nature reserve’s history stagnated, remaining as a public nature attraction. However, this all changed on the 23rd of October, 2164. A person known as Wister Chaild was geocaching in the area when ve spotted a strange creature, twice the size of a person, with large wings and two tails - Chaild’s Monster.

The fen was, naturally, closed to the public after this event, as people tried to locate the cryptid. After there were no further sightings, the fen was reopened. However, word got out on the internet that there was a monster there, and amateur monster hunters flooded the place, harming the wildlife and forcing the site to be closed for good.

After the site was closed, rumours began to abound that it was because the monster had been found, sparking almost as many conspiracy theories as the infamous Area 51. In these theories, the fen became often referred to as ‘Godswamp’ or ‘Chaild’s Fen’, to the point that eventually the latter became the more common name for it, despite Wicken Fen still being the official title.
