Voor
Voor are a species of sapient bipedal humanoids that originated on the now-arctic world of Hiverion. Their natural biology is better-suited to warmer climates, such as a tundra or cool continental world, but the rapid cooling of Hiverion turned the planet into an arctic world. In order to adapt and survive, the Voor have long since embraced cybernetics on a species-wide level. Voor are given low-level cybernetic implants from birth, and receive a full cybernetic suite at adolescence. These cybernetic packages extend Voor life expectancies well beyond other species, up to four decades past their natural lifespan. Combined with standard genetic treatments, Voor often live for at least 140 years.
The first set of cybernetics developed by the Voor were designed to improve their survivability on their cooling homeworld. Internal heaters, more resilient skin, and transparent eye coverings allowed Voor to live on the surface with little protective gear, as they had before the cooling. These basic implants turned out to be highly effective when colonising other planets, as the internal heaters could be repurposed as coolers, while the resilient skin protected against a variety of health hazards.
While Voor are often considered to be more intelligent than other species, they do not actually possess more raw cognitive power than usual. Compared to some species, such as Xanis, they actually have inferior cognitive power. However, the Voor do have the ability to learn extremely quickly, grasping new concepts and developing them with ease. This, combined with a society-wide approach to scholarship and learning, means the average Voor displays more subjective markers of intelligence than they otherwise should.
The Voor dedication to intelligence and cybernetics has led to many other species considering them off-putting. Many Voor social cues are awkward or uncanny for other species, making conversations difficult.
