After years of slavery, the humans now outnumber the elves. The humans revolt against their masters and start a guerilla faction carrying attacks out in the elven kingdoms.
As a punishment, dark elves are put in a lower class than their high elf cousins. The are decreed to serve as a reminder of their failure. The dark elves are treated to near human standards. Though not slaves, they are neither fully free.
The elves send an envoy to the dwarves asking for help with the human uprising. The dwarves send back the envoy empty handed.
The elves desperate to preserve themselves begin to systematically slaughter humans without regard. Some humans escape, but most fall to the genocide.
The humans find a suitable place far away from the elves to settle.
The elves, angry at the dwarves abandonment, take action and cave in one of the dwarves main mine shafts killing hundreds.
The dwarves discover the reason for the cave in. In blind fury they declare war on the elves.

As humans borders expand, they find themselves closer to the other races. As they expand they find it easy to take the resources of villages on the outskirts.
History seems to stop for a while, nothing seems to happen. The war between the dwarves and elves is at a stalemate, and thus a ceasefire is called. All factions are able to focus on infrastructure, technology, and culture. Humans are under the radar of all factions during this time, conducting minor raids that are passed off as mere bandit attacks.
With the help from the dwarves, the gnomes are able to make great mechanical creations. With the aid of these contraptions, the gnomes were able to build massive structures and great weapons of war. The dwarves are able to take this time to really hone in their understanding of metallurgy and develop a new technique for making superior metals. The elves are able to master the arcane arts and develop a culture focusing on military growth. With this comes the creation of new weapons and armor technology. The humans develop their kingdom, focusing on self improvement instead of border expansion.
At the end of the Era of Peace, a strange phenomena occurs. The sky turns pitch black for three days and three nights. During this time, whole settlements disappear all together as if they never existed. People, both influential and benign, do the same. After the event passes mountains that didn't exist before appear, canyons scar Midterra where cities once stood, oceans disappear and reappear in different locations.
Elves attack a fortified dwarven envoy in their borders thinking it to be a scouting party.
The elves and dwarves agree the best way to foster peace is to live in harmony. A peace treaty is made and both factions send groups to live in each others kingdoms.
Dwarven citizens grow tired of having elves live amongst them and take the matter in their own hands by killing off elves on sight.
The dwarves kill their own citizens caught associating themselves with the slaughter of the elves. After stopping those responsible, the dwarves send an envoy to the elves with the remaining elven citizens.
For two years the dwarves cannot contact the elves or their kin amongst them. One day an elven envoy arrives with twenty covered wagons in toe. In the wagons, the dead dwarves of those who previously found a home in the elven kingdom.
A little person mistaken as a dwarf wanders into the human kingdom. After some time it is found out that this is in fact, not a dwarf.
A human hunter kills a deer with the body of a human.
Orcs are found on the southern coast and raise a massive army to attack the humans.
The dwarves make a decisive victory against the elves and takes the only pass between the kingdoms.
The humans, who up until now have been thought to be no threat by the elves, make a comeback and start attacking elven settlements and raiding caravans in the woods.
The humans succesfully defend against the orcish onslaught and kills enough to make the orcs retreat. The humans then take a strategic foothold in the region.
The dwarves and gnomes solidify their long standing alliance and friendship by melding both kingdoms together to form the Ember Stone Pact.
The elves push back against the humans in attempt to take back their city, yet fail. Simultaneously, the orcs and goblins ally and lay siege to the land.
Gnomes discover that trapping hot air in canvas lifts things.
The humans are able to break off the siege relatively quickly and take an offensive against the orcs and goblins. In this process, the humans nearly wipe out both races as they retreat.
The elves are able to successfully re-assert control of the chaos the humans have caused them in their woods and roads.
