World Ember Prep 2024

Week 1

  Goals!
That's the goal. Not pushing too hard, just getting through the 10k words and then seeing how it goes.   My focus for the month will be putting down and developing and gathering together the details from Novelember. Probably specifically focusing on the characters and getting their details down and coherent so that my cowriter and I will be able to ensure they're consistent when we get into edits.   And fine, I'll take a look at the meta.

Week 2

I checked out the homepage for this world and it is what it is. I added a few more details just to make it more accurate, but the whole thing is still in flux so I don't want to get too detailed with it just yet.   Midnight Town Primer is here. It's just a start, since the world is still just a start.   I don't really want to mess with community tools yet. I'll probably add them during World Ember if at all. This stuff is all still pretty new. One plan I have, that may be implemented through the month, is adding subscriber groups for the three main factions. Most people in the world belong to one of the factions, so it could be a fun way of working it, but at this early phase it might not work so well.   I was very careful when I chose from the preset themes and that is about as far as I get with CSS.

Week 3

As it turns out, I've been on a bit of a Supernatural kick. Since the urban fantasy suits, I think that qualifies for watching something similar to the world I'm working on. It gave me some ideas for monsters and in one case got me to tweak the rules for something. No copying, just some good underpinnings.   Okay. So maybe I forgot about how much fun it was to make a Pinterest board for stories. I got so many good ideas just from taking five minutes to throw up some visuals on the board, and then I kept going. You can see it here, in the Midnight Town board, if you want.   As for music, I'm writing a book based in this world during Novelember, so I'm assuming I'll just keep on listening to the same ones. Weirdly enough, the Star Trek: First Contact soundtrackhas been coming up a lot. I just find it relaxing and thoughtful.

Week 4

This is a co-written book and world, so my community in this case will probably be simply my coauthor. There's a few writing groups that I've skirted at the edge of that I've wanted to get more involved in. This could be the month to make it happen.   My schedule this month is going to be about finding the free days and leaning in on those specific moments. I've already marked out which days I'll lean in and work on World Ember. It might be a little challenging if my work schedule changes, but there's enough holiday days blocked off that if I really need to I can sneak in a bit extra there.   Relaxing this month to prepare for World Ember isn't going to happen. I'm doing Novelember, starting a new job, and figuring out a Thanksgiving that includes a few extra steps this year. I'm taking the first week in December to rest from all that, and then I'll dive into World Ember. Less time, but my brain will thank me with renewed creativity, I hope. I take daily short walks outside, so that's my fresh air.   So that's everything! I'm officially prepared for World Ember. Time to light up the forge! (Or maybe the oven so I can make brownies for my DnD session.)

Best of luck for the 10000 words - hope they come to you easily. Have a great Worldember.

Sit down, my friend, and let me tell you of Aran'sha . A world where the sands shift and the stars sing, where the wind carries secrets and the twin moons keep silent vigil over it all.
