Petrifying: The Basilisk?

The basilisk of Midnight Town can neither be confirmed nor denied. Most people are pretty sure that it exists. There are occasional instances of petrification. But those can also be attributed to witches and wizards messing around, and not specifically a big ol' snake thing.
For a town full of monsters and arcane creatures, this is their cryptid.
It's a basilisk in the traditional sense, where a serpent's egg is incubated under a cockerel.
There's been a number of supposed sightings, but they've all been disproven.
Basilisks aren't a usual kind of creature. No one wants to discount it, but not every legend can be real, right?
