The Eldar
The Eldar were the first walkers of The Plane and they created most of the cosmos as it's known today. Certain members of their species then became the divines during The Separation.
The Eldar emerged from The Weave, born from Astral Energy and they were the purest beings to ever exist. At some point they manifested their essence in an avatar; a body. This "grounded" them on The Plane and offered all types of experiences and opportunities. They were still connected to their Astral Self however and they used that connection greatly to their advantage. The phenomenon was simply called "an Astral". Their Astrals became their number one tool, and their number one measure of power. The Eldar with the strongest Astrals ruled the others.
It is uncertain when exactly, but at some point the Eldar (or rather a small group of them) managed to become one with their Astral, returning to their original form as primarily spiritual beings, but they were a lot different after their time spent in physical form. They had constructed a universe and now sought to preserve it from the outside.
